Eagles players embrace history, fans' connection to Kelly Green uniforms

From the look to the tradition, the players understand that it's more than just a jersey color.

Eric Allen will serve as the Honorary Captain for Sunday's game against the New York Giants. At halftime, Allen will receive his Pro Football Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence as a long-awaited member of the Class of 2025.

When the date for the ceremony was announced, Allen's four sons had a request of their father.

"All four of my boys want something back from the Kelly Green game," Allen joked.

Eagles fans would agree. The team will don the retro Kelly Green jerseys for the first time this season. Allen is not surprised by his boys' request.

"I know the Kelly Greens are special to the fan base. Of course, me. The jerseys look great," Allen said. "It just kind of helps the fan base go back in time and when you go back in time, you bring up those names – Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Randall Cunningham, myself, and Seth Joyner, and maybe some younger Eagles fans are able to, 'Hey, why does my dad and my grandpa wear 21 and Kelly Green?' The Kelly Green, I think, gave back a nostalgic feel for the Eagle faithful and the Eagle nation and I think it helped me get to this point."

Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio was getting his start in the NFL as a linebackers coach in New Orleans when Allen entered the league. He witnessed some of Allen's greatest moments as an Eagle come at the Saints' expense – a two-interception performance in the 1992 Wild Card Round, followed by returning two interceptions for touchdowns in a single game against New Orleans the next season.

"I remember him being a really good corner," Fangio said. "He was sticky in coverage, quick, good change of direction, competent tackler, really good ball skills, good ball clock. I mean, how many interceptions did he have ... 58? That's a lot for a corner," Fangio said. "I mean, to me, that says it all – 58 picks. You got to have elite ball skills, got to be able to find the ball, got to be able to be tight in coverage. He definitely was worthy of the Hall of Fame."

The current Eagles players also love the Kelly Green jerseys. Linebacker Zack Baun calls it "the best jersey in the league. No doubt." Quarterback Jalen Hurts sported a Kelly Green Starter jacket and baseball cap at his weekly press conference on Wednesday, wasting no time to rock the throwback threads.

"It's always fun, the tradition, what it represents, the history, and all the pride and great memories that have been created in it," Hurts said. "Hopefully, we can continue to win games wearing them."

The Eagles brought back the Kelly Green jerseys in the 2023 season and have won all four games wearing them in stylish fashion, in both look and performance. Running back Saquon Barkley's iconic reverse hurdle came wearing the Kelly Green jerseys against Jacksonville last season. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith made one of his ridiculous one-handed, toe-tapping grabs in the back of the end zone in that same game. For Smith, the team's top draft pick in 2021, he's embraced the team's history, learning from and developing relationships with the all-time great receivers, including Harold Carmichael and Mike Quick.

"Those guys set the standard of being a receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles. As a guy that's coming up now, those are the guys that I chase to cement myself as one of the best receivers to come through Philadelphia. When you look at those guys, that's the blueprint. This is what they did and that's what you're chasing," Smith said.

Smith has etched his name into the record books, owning the franchise marks for rookie receiving yards and most receiving yards in postseason history.

"I wouldn't say I'd put my name among that class," Smith said of chasing the franchise legends. "I think I'm heading in the right direction, but there's a lot more work to be done."

Baun admitted that when he signed with the Eagles as a free agent in March 2024, he didn't know much about the team's history. He received an important lesson just before the start of the Super Bowl run.

Eagles Hall of Fame linebacker Bill Bergey passed away just after Christmas following a prolonged battle with cancer. Bergey's family gave Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman one of Bergey's medallions. Roseman shared with the linebackers what Bergey meant to the organization's history. He then presented Baun with the medallion to wear as a good luck charm. Baun finished as just the second NFL linebacker since 1991 to record a takeaway in each of his first four postseason starts, which featured an interception of Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LIX.

"It was really special," Baun said. "As I've been here, you learn as you go because the greats in Eagles history are brought up so often. You know about the Randall Cunninghams and the Bergeys, all the people that came before, so it was really cool to work my way up. I felt like I truly earned that honor to represent him and his family."

The Kelly Green jerseys return Sunday!

For the first time this season, the Eagles will wear the vintage Kelly Green jerseys when they take on the New York Giants. Check out everything you need to know about the throwback uniforms!

While Baun is still relatively new to Philadelphia, his running mate Jihaad Campbell grew up in South Jersey as an Eagles fan. He always dreamed of putting on an Eagles jersey and understands the significance of the Kelly Green uniform.

"Those uniforms are very unique. Just growing up as a Birds fan and looking at the jerseys in general, I thought if I could have one moment to put them on, it would be very special not only for me, but for my family as well. It's very special," Campbell said. "Life can take you so many different places and it brought me here, so I'm extremely blessed. I look at those guys with those uniforms and they wore it with pride and integrity, just with a lot of heart.

"It's the same way we're going to rep it."

The Kelly Green jerseys will return for three games in 2025, all against NFC East rivals, including the road clash in Dallas against the Cowboys. Check out the best images of the Eagles in Kelly Green since they returned as throwbacks in the 2023 campaign.
