LANDOVER, Md. – Head Coach Nick Sirianni acknowledged after Sunday night's 27-10 loss to the Washington Commanders that his team is in "somewhat uncharted territory."
Sirianni has guided the Eagles through rough patches in his previous five seasons as head coach. There is one thing that he can bank on, that he is going to "fight like hell" to steer the ship back in the right direction.
"Until we coach better, until we are better with our detail as coaches, until our players play with better detail, then we're going to see the same results. That falls on me," Sirianni said. "With all of the detail that's not happening right now, I got to try a different approach. I'll do everything I can do to try different things to make sure we're getting that point across."
The Eagles jumped quickly on the Commanders Sunday night, as running back Saquon Barkley – who battled through hamstring and back injuries – scored a 3-yard direct-snap touchdown with 4:27 remaining in the first quarter to extend an early 10-0 lead. But the Eagles didn't score again. Two drives ended in turnovers, and another potential scoring drive was undone by a string of penalties that led to Jake Elliott's first missed kick of the season.
Quarterback Tanner McKee threw for 212 yards and an interception in his third start of the season. He called the offense's performance "frustrating," but summarized the team's struggles as not being able to follow through on the "details and execution."
"We need to be better," McKee said. "We have the urgency. We have the fight."
Sirianni echoed McKee's remarks.
"We need to get better as a whole," Sirianni said. "I got a lot of faith in everybody in that locker room. I got a lot of faith in the coaches in that locker room. I know we got a bunch of guys who will fight regardless of the circumstances."
