Jaelan Phillips shines in Eagles debut

A lot has changed for Jaelan Phillips in the last week. The former first-round pick was traded by the Dolphins to the Eagles, and he quickly had to get acclimated to a new city, team, and playbook.

Well, his first impression on Eagles fans couldn't have gone much better.

Phillips finished Monday's win with seven quarterback pressures, six tackles, one fumble recovery, and made the biggest play of the game, stopping Josh Jacobs on fourth-and-1 with less than a minute and a half remaining to help secure the victory.

It was a stellar debut for Phillips, one that started a new chapter in his football life.

"I just felt super grateful," Phillips said postgame. "It was the first time in a while that I've gotten a little emotional before a game. Obviously this stage and coming here, it's my first time at Lambeau (Field), walking out through that tunnel, I mean, it doesn't get better than that. Definitely grateful. Felt amazing energy from the guys. It was just an air of confidence. Everybody played together. We had a great game, honestly, super gritty.

"... This is a completely different feeling, a different environment. You get emotional before certain games. I don't know. It was a new feeling, because this was just like symbolic of a lot of change in my life and kind of a new path, new destiny. So for this to be the first game and for it to play out how it did, it's surreal."

The Eagles' defensive line had its best game of the season, getting to Jordan Love time and time again while slowing down a strong Green Bay run game. Philadelphia sacked Love three times and consistently put pressure on the quarterback (17 total pressures), forcing him to make tough throws or, in one case, fumble deep in Eagles territory.

Love's 68.8 passer rating was his lowest in a game since 2023 and his 55.5 percent completion rate was his worst since he faced the Eagles in Brazil to open the 2024 season.

"I think we rushed well," Phillips said. "I still think there's a lot of meat on the bone and coming in, working together, we only had a handful of days in practice to kind of get this game plan right. So I think that the longer time that we spend together, the more time we spend in practice and meetings and everything, kind of just getting closer and getting that rush as cohesive as possible, I think it's just going to only go up from here."

For Phillips, Monday night marked a strong start to his Eagles tenure. Right now, he's just trying to take it one day at a time and provide value when on the field. Mission accomplished against the Packers.

"I'm just glad I could come in and help the team," he said. "My biggest thing coming in [was] like no ego and [I] just wanted to earn the respect of my teammates and my coaches and the fans and everybody. All I can really do on my end is obviously do my job and know my plays and everything like that, but just play with fanatical effort. That's what I do, play in and play out. So obviously it's great to be able to get some production and make big plays for the team."

DeVonta Smith, Saquon Barkley give offense spark

After scoring just three points through three quarters, the Eagles' offense needed to get going to extend their lead. Enter Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith, who needed just one play each to get the Eagles in the end zone.

The first came on 3rd-and-7, when Jalen Hurts found Saquon Barkley in the flat and the running back did the rest. After picking up the first down, Barkley hit his defender with a clean spin move and sprinted for extra yardage. The 41-yard catch-and-run moved the Eagles into Green Bay territory.

"I got one-on-one in open space. And whether it's a spin move, whether it's a jump — we call it a bag — I feel like I can do whatever I want in that situation," Barkley said. "I think I'm going to win that situation more times than not. It was a big play for us and an even a bigger play by Smitty."

On the very next play, Jalen Hurts fired a deep ball to DeVonta Smith, who went over his defender for a 36-yard touchdown grab, the game's first touchdown. It gave the Eagles a two-possession lead and helped them hang on for their seventh victory of the season.

"That's the main objective, come out here and get a win," Smith said. "It was ugly. Offensively, we struggled, but we came out on top."

Nick Sirianni: 'We found a way to win'

Nick Sirianni is no stranger to winning.

With a 7-2 record, the Eagles are the No. 1 seed in the NFC entering Week 11. The Eagles have started the season 7-2 or better for four years in a row, marking the longest such streak in franchise history.

Sirianni won his 61st game, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Dick Vermeil for the third most in Eagles history (including playoffs). Sirianni's .714 win percentage is the second best of all NFL head coaches in the Super Bowl era.

Sirianni is now 5-0 after the Bye Week in the regular season and 10-0 in his head coaching career against the NFC North.

But one of the hallmarks of his tenure has been navigating the tightrope between being appreciative of that success and not getting caught up in the trappings of winning.

"Sometimes it is going to look really pretty and sometimes it is not always going to look pretty in this league. We found a way to win. We will be very critical. We've got to enjoy these wins. It is hard to come into this place against this team, well coached, good players, and win a game. So we have to enjoy this. Make no mistake about it, every one of us is determined to get better and continuing to rise," Sirianni said.

"You can ask any of those guys, when we get back in there on Monday, obviously this week will be a little bit different, and we are correcting the tape, we are very critical of ourselves as coaches, starting with that. You can ask some of these coaches if some of these game-film reviews are enjoyable at times. They are not, and that is my job as the head coach to make sure that we are doing everything. You can't get tied up into the result. Obviously, we are here to win games and obviously we are paid to win games. That is our job and we've got to find ways to do that, but ultimately we want to play to the standard of football that we know we need to play to continue to get better."

Jalen Hurts savors full-circle moment at Lambeau Field

On December 6, 2020, Jalen Hurts took over as the quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles. He entered the game, tossed his first touchdown pass, and showed how his legs would make him a triple threat for the offense.

He returned on Monday night as one of the most decorated quarterbacks of the generation. He took a moment before kickoff to acknowledge the progress that he's made over the course of his time as the franchise player.

"I did something different that I'd never really done before as you go out before the game and assess the stadium, and get a feel for the environment and the weather a bit. I felt like that was warranted given where we're playing at, and I'd say how big of a game it was coming in, knowing it's off a Bye Week, knowing it's against a really good opponent, and knowing we're entering a really big stretch," Hurts said after the win. "But I'm very fortunate to be where I am, I know I'm not here without the hard work, the patience and taking advantage of an opportunity, and ultimately the organization giving me an opportunity. So, I'd definitely say it means something to me to kind of complete the circle of winning in Lambeau."

In a showcase for both defenses on Monday night, Hurts threw for 183 yards and a touchdown for a 92.3 passer rating, while rushing for 27 yards. He also lost a fumble, just his third total turnover of the season. Still, the offense came up with enough big plays in the second half to head home with the win.

"It's a big-time win, it's a big testament to our team," Hurts said. "Defense played lights out. Lights out. Won the situational battle, showed up in the end of the game when we could've avoided putting them in that position, but I felt like when there was a mishap we had each other's backs, and that's all you can ask for. I'm proud of how we competed. I'm proud of how we weathered through and persevered. I think we showed great resilience throughout this game, and that's a hell of a team we played. That's the best defense we've played all year with the talent that they have, the ability to rush the passer, who they have in the back end, a really good group, so obviously we'll enjoy this one while we can."
