Nick Sirianni: 'We've just got to get up'
Head Coach Nick Sirianni knows that his team must quickly turn the page from Sunday's loss in Dallas.
"We've just got to get up. We've got a short week," Sirianni said as the Eagles host the 8-3 Chicago Bears on Black Friday at Lincoln Financial Field. "We didn't do two things quite well enough tonight. Give them credit and then get up and get back to work.
"Obviously, at the end of the day, we didn't coach well enough. We didn't play well enough. And when there's the amount of mistakes that we had, some of the self-inflicted wounds that we had today, I'm always going to put that on me as a head coach, because, you know, it's something that we talk about an awful lot. And I've got to make sure my message is getting through."
The Eagles scored touchdowns on their first three offensive possessions to take a 21-0 lead, but were held scoreless in the second half.
"They did a couple different things personnel-wise that they came out in to try to do some different things for the run game. They were giving us – I thought Jalen (Hurts) did a good job as far as, early in the game they were giving us one thing when they played a certain coverage. Then it changed, and they tried to take away some of the things that we were throwing to A.J. (Brown). And Jalen did a good job on some of those, getting the ball down to Saquon (Barkley) in the flat.
"So just a little different variations of how they played the coverages from what I'm seeing on the fly. Hats off to them. They did some good things there. We got the lead, they clawed back, they battled, and, you know, at the end of the day, we weren't good enough."
Jalen Hurts: 'I have a lot of confidence in how we'll respond'
Jalen Hurts threw for 289 yards and scored three total touchdowns on Sunday, but it wasn't enough to earn the victory.
"I think overarching, we've got to find a way to finish the game and find some consistency in what we do," Hurts said. "It was definitely a tale of two halves. But in the end, we didn't play a good game as a team. Today, it got us. Give a lot of respect to Dallas and their team, how they competed. Something we question right now is how we respond to it and I have a lot of confidence in how we'll respond."
Hurts embraces the "opportunity for us to come together" as the Eagles regroup ahead of the Black Friday matchup with the Bears.
"Eliminate the things that don't matter and focus on the things we can control and go out there and play together and move forward," Hurts said. "It's just a matter of staying consistent. Being resilient. Having endurance and just pushing forward. Today wasn't our day. And, I look at myself in the mirror and I say, 'I have to do more. I have to dig, and muster things out, and try to figure it out. For all of us.' But, you know, that is the type of character that you like everyone to have. We just have to have the right type of synergy. The right type of energy. And come together and push forward like I know we are capable of. We'll be just fine."
On Sunday, Hurts' two rushing-touchdown performance was the 19th such game of his career, including playoffs, breaking a tie with Josh Allen for the most by a quarterback in NFL history. He also set the Eagles' franchise record for most rushing scores, including the postseason, with 71.
Saquon Barkley: 'We're going to respond'
In a tie game during the fourth quarter, the Eagles had the ball in field goal range when Jalen Hurts dumped a pass down to Saquon Barkley. Barkley didn't see a defender coming behind him, and the ball got punched free for the Eagles' first turnover of the game.
It was a critical play as the Eagles' four-game winning streak was snapped in a 24-21 loss to the Cowboys in Dallas.
"I just let the team down in that moment," Barkley said after the game. "So that one is going to sting. But being in this profession, you're going to make plays and you're going to have mistakes. You just got to respond. Go back to the drawing board. We got a short week, and I just got to get right for the team."
Barkley was held to just 22 yards on 10 carries against Dallas. The Cowboys kept the Eagles' rush attack in check with Jalen Hurts finishing as the leading rusher. The longest rush for Philadelphia was just 8 yards.
Barkley took accountability for the running game's struggles after the game but is looking ahead to how he can improve next week.
"I'm a big believer that the run game starts with me and ends with me," he said. "So I'm in a little funk right now. I've had funks like this before. Just got to break it. And the only way I know how is by flushing this, working my butt off, and getting ready for my next opportunity. ... Just didn't play good. Didn't play even close to good, to be honest. But I'm a big boy. I'm a man at the end of the day. I'm going to own it and get ready for next week."
While Barkley took the blame for the loss, there were a lot of opportunities for the Eagles that led to the loss in Dallas. The Eagles had their chances and weren't able to capitalize in key moments.
"A lot of confidence in how Saquon will respond to whatever he holds himself accountable to," Hurts said. "So, he's taking a bat for that, but that's not all him. There's a lot of opportunities in the game to not even be in that situation. So I can't put that on him. As a competitor, I know how he is, I know where he is, and I know how he will work moving forward. And I think that would be infectious to the rest of us. At the end of the day, it is about having the right example, as I said, we are all willing to learn from the things that we do, come together, and move forward."
The Eagles are 8-3 after Sunday's loss, and they have a short week before facing the Chicago Bears (8-3) on Black Friday. Barkley is confident Philadelphia will be able to bounce back from the difficult loss and get back into the win column.
"I kind of know how we're going to respond," he said. "I know the team that we have. It's not our first time losing. (We) played a great team. They made a lot of moves. It was a different team. That was not the same team we played Week 1. We knew that. They played with a lot of emotion. I feel like the team that we have, we're going to respond. We have Chicago, so just get ready for them."
Nakobe Dean doesn't use injuries as an excuse
The Eagles lost three members of the back half of the defense on Sunday as safety Reed Blankenship, cornerback Adoree' Jackson, and safety Andrew Mukuba all exited the game.
"Of course it's always tough when guys go down. But in the NFL, you got to step up," Dean said.
Dean recorded a sack in three straight games, becoming the first Eagle to do so since his fellow Georgia Bulldog Nolan Smith pulled off the feat in the playoffs last season. He barreled through Cowboys Javonte Williams on his way to taking down quarterback Dak Prescott on a third down early in the third quarter to end a drive. Dean also had an interception negated by a penalty.
Despite two turnovers and forcing a turnover on downs twice, the Cowboys won the game on a walk-off 42-yard field goal from Brandon Aubrey.
"We could have played better overall as a whole defense," Dean said. "We're going to be all right. We've got a short week. We're going to get right back to it."
A.J. Brown: 'It's a game of inches'
A.J. Brown posted season-highs in both receptions (8) and receiving yards (110) on Sunday, but pointed to himself when it came to the "self-inflicted wounds" that kept the Eagles from leaving Dallas with a win Sunday.
"We just got to be better. We got to be better as a unit, including myself," Brown said.
"We have men here who want to get better and we're going to learn from this. We know how to come back from this kind of loss. I'm not too worried about this team."
Brown gained 16 yards on the Eagles' first two pass plays of the game then put up the opening points of the game on a 16-yard throw over the middle from Jalen Hurts. Six of Brown's eight catches resulted in either a touchdown or a first down.
"Just taking what they gave us and tried to capitalize on it," Brown said.
As a team captain, Brown is focused on consistency and removing the valleys from the offense's performance.
"They're still a good football team. This is a division game. It's a game of inches," Brown said. "We just try to take it one day at a time and clean up the things that we need to get better at.
"Just keep chopping wood and carrying water."
Jordan Mailata: 'You've got to flush that game'
The Eagles have a quick turnaround before facing the Bears on Black Friday. After Sunday's game, tackle Jordan Mailata pointed to unforced errors like penalties as a key reason for the loss.
He knows the Eagles need to clean those aspects up to get back in the win column, and they won't have to wait long for their next opportunity.
"You've got to flush that game," Mailata said. "On the short week, we've got to flush it. We've got to learn from it. We've got to grow from it. And you've got to have those hard conversations. With yourself first, look internally because that's the only way we can continue to move forward is just look internally and really hold yourself to a high standard."
