Spadaro: 'Fun challenge' vs. Micah Parsons and Packers defense awaits Eagles

The Eagles are quite familiar with not only Green Bay’s defense from last year, but the prolific pass rusher added just before the start of the season.

The rest, everyone agrees, was well-timed and gave the players a much-needed breather. But, everyone also agrees, it was only one week, so the general body soreness accrued from a long Training Camp and eight games in the regular season didn't go away and hide.

It really never left.

"It's kind of like a callous," interior lineman Brett Toth said. "You're still sore, but less sore than before the Bye Week, obviously. For me, it was a chance to de-load mentally. You never relax during a season, but having that time away, we had a few days to get ready for the second half of the season. You still take care of your body. In this sport, you don't get away from time on task, keeping your body under pressure, staying ready for the contact.

"That never stops during the course of the season. But having that week off, definitely, was appreciated here."

Toth, coming off his outstanding game against the Giants at center in place of the injured Cam Jurgens, kept at it during the Bye Week: The workouts, the recovery, the stress on the body that is so important to build up and maintain for a long season. He's been taking the reps at center in practice this week with Jurgens still on the sidelines after suffering the knee injury against Minnesota. Whatever happens for Monday, Toth is ready.

That's the mindset. Every. Single. Week.

This is a marathon, mentally and physically.

"I felt like I was in a car crash for multiple weeks in a row," left tackle Jordan Mailata said. "We needed that. The mental break as well. That was much needed. It's hard to explain, mentally, what it's like to be a professional footballer. Especially here in Philly. It's hard to describe. You just have to be a part of it. Only the guys in this locker room can understand. It's a lot. So, that mental break was much needed.

"And that physical break came at a great time, too. We needed it. We've got a lot of guys back this week, so I'm super excited about that to keep building on what we created the last two weeks (prior to the Bye Week)."

Just like that, then, the Eagles are deep into the preparation for the Green Bay Packers and their formidable defense, one that is allowing just 286 yards per game, fifth-best in the NFL. They have racked up 22 quarterback sacks and Micah Parsons leads the league with 44 quarterback pressures to go along with 6.5 quarterback sacks.

Pump up the volume.

The pressure is at full tilt heading into Week 10 for the offensive line.

"He opens up a lot of opportunities for other guys," Mailata said of Parsons, who moves up and down the line of scrimmage probing for weaknesses. "We've faced Micah a lot of times (from when Parsons played with Dallas), so we know what kind of player he is, man, and we know the kind of disruption he can present.

"We have never made it about anybody else. It's about us and doing what we can do to make sure that he does not disrupt our game. The coaches have to put us in those positions, but we have to go out and execute. Micah has a sixth sense for the game. Some players have that sixth sense and he's got it."

There is a whole lot more to Green Bay, of course, and everything starts up front with an offensive line that is coming off a season-best effort against the Giants – 276 rushing yards, four touchdown passes from quarterback Jalen Hurts, and three touchdowns in three red zone possessions.

Replicating that will be a huge task against a Green Bay defense that allows a measly 20.8 points per game and that is the only defense in the NFL to not allow a first-quarter touchdown all season.

"They're really good at all three levels," guard Tyler Steen said. "We have played them enough (two times last season, including a win in the playoffs) to know what they do, and they've added to that defense. It's just like every week, but they have great players at all three levels. We're going to have to be at our best to win this game. That's a fun challenge."
