You do what you have to do to win games, and there are few in the NFL who win games as well as Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. In defeating the Dallas Cowboys 24-20 on Thursday night, Hurts upped his record as a starter since the 2022 season to 38-10 and at the end of the day – or very, very long night as was the case for Philadelphia in Week 1 – isn't winning all that matters?
"To us, yeah, that's the only thing that matters and Jalen wins football games," All-Pro right tackle Lane Johnson said. "He knows how to rise to the moment and find a way. Sometimes it isn't the way we draw it up, but doesn't matter. He wins. We're here to win."
Hurts opened his 2025 season with a gem against Dallas, slicing up the Cowboys' defense with a short, controlled passing game and taking some opportunistic jaunts with his legs. If you write down the numbers, they add up to this: 152 passing yards, 62 rushing yards, and two rushing touchdowns. Taking a deeper dive, there were some other extremely important and impressive numbers Hurts produced as the Eagles head into the long weekend 1-0:
- He did not turn the football over in the combined 37 "touches" (23 passing attempts, 14 rushing attempts).
- Hurts had three kneeldowns at the very end of the game after he converted a third-and-3 situation with a win-icing run for 4 yards, so take that into account for his total production. Oh, and with those runs – many of which came as Hurts saw openings after dropping back to pass and used his legs to gain yardage – Hurts picked up five first downs.
- He completed 19 of his 23 passing attempts and compiled a passer rating of 94.2.
- The Eagles were efficient offensively in the red zone, scoring touchdowns on all three drives inside the Dallas 20-yard line.
- Philadelphia scored a touchdown on all three of its first-half possessions and opened the second half with a field goal drive.
Things were not nearly as perfect as the team wanted after that, so everyone understands there are facets of the offense that need to improve. That comes with the territory in the NFL.
"We were efficient. It came down to execution and we were able to do that," Hurts said. "There's so much unknown. We didn't know what they were going to do or be, what this iteration of that defense would be under new leadership (new Dallas coaching staff). I think for the most part, we did a good job of doing that. We have to play better in the end of the game so we can close it out on our terms and we ended up doing that, but you want to take advantage of the first opportunity to do that. That's something that we'll all learn from.
"But bringing it back to just finding ways to win, that's what it comes down to. It doesn't matter how it looks, it doesn't matter how it goes, it's just about finding ways to win. In this league, it is very challenging, especially in these first games."
Finding ways to win. That's what it is all about, indeed.
"You have to make the plays and Jalen does that," running back Saquon Barkley said. "He keeps things calm and cool and when it's time to step up, that's exactly what he does."
Anyone who measures Hurts by the statistics of the game is missing the point. Oh, he puts the ball in the end zone – he has 16 games with more than one touchdown rushing, an NFL record, and his 57 rushing TDs rank third in league history behind Cam Newton (75) and Josh Allen (65) – and his giveaway numbers are generally low, and all of that leads to finishing on the plus side in the win/loss game.
All that matters is winning football games.
"I'm proud of the team," Hurts said. "I'm proud of everybody weathering the different adversities that came our way today. It's always good to get a win. Always good to get a win."
It sure is.
