The Eagles announced a series of moves on Saturday morning to increase the experience, depth, and competition in the safety room for this upcoming season.

Philadelphia agreed to terms with a pair of veterans, Marcus Epps and J.T. Gray, on one-year deals. The team also engineered a trade, agreeing to send safety Sydney Brown to the Atlanta Falcons. In terms of compensation, the Eagles and Falcons will swap picks in the fourth and sixth rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Here's more on the moves:

Eagles agree to terms with Marcus Epps

Epps returns to Philadelphia after rejoining the team prior to the start of the 2025 regular season. Trusted and reliable, the 30-year-old Epps played in 12 games (4 starts) for the Eagles this past season, registering 19 tackles in 250 defensive snaps.

Originally a sixth-round pick of the Vikings in 2019, Epps was claimed off waivers by the Eagles in the middle of his rookie season and quickly found footing in Philadelphia. A key reserve early in his career, Epps became a full-time starter for the first time in 2022, starting all 17 games and posting a career-high 92 tackles and six passes defensed while lining up for a team-best 1,096 defensive snaps for the league's top-ranked passing defense.

The 6-foot, 191-pound Epps parlayed that run to the Super Bowl into a free-agent deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he started all 17 games again in 2023 before a knee injury shortened his 2024 campaign. After being released by the Raiders at the end of Training Camp last year, Epps rejoined the Eagles' practice squad and landed on the active roster by the end of September.

In 94 career games (49 starts), Epps has 296 tackles, 11 for loss, three interceptions, and 18 passes defensed.

One of the league's preeminent special teams players over the last decade with the New Orleans Saints, J.T. Gray comes to Philadelphia as a three-time All-Pro selection, most recently as a second-team pick in 2024. He was also a four-time team captain in New Orleans.

Undrafted out of Mississippi State in 2018, the 6-foot, 202-pound Gray spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Saints. He posted double-digit special teams tackles five times, setting a career-high with an NFL-best 26 in that '24 run. He also blocked a punt against the Eagles that year.

From 2019-24, Gray's 93 special teams tackles led the NFL. During his New Orleans tenure, Gray played in 98 games, notching 93 special teams tackles, two blocked punts, and a fumble recovery. Gray contributed 14 more tackles, 2.5 sacks, one pass breakup, and forced one fumble on defense.

The 30-year-old Gray played a total of five games for the Broncos and Buccaneers last season.

Eagles agree to trade Sydney Brown to the Falcons

Here is the full scope of the trade:

  • The Eagles get a 2026 fourth-round pick (No. 114 overall) and a 2026 sixth-round pick (No. 197 overall), moving up in both rounds.
  • Atlanta receives Brown, a 2026 fourth-round pick (No. 122 overall), and a 2026 sixth-round pick (No. 215 overall).

Brown was a third-round selection by the Eagles in 2023 out of Illinois. His promising rookie campaign, one that featured a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown, was cut short by a knee injury in the regular-season finale. He battled back to contribute on special teams in the Eagles' Super Bowl season, earning the Ed Block Courage Award from his teammates. This past season, Brown played in all 17 regular-season games and contributed 20 tackles on defense in 249 snaps. He also returned a Cameron Latu blocked punt for a touchdown to open the scoring in the Week 4 win at Tampa Bay.

Now, the Eagles have Epps, Gray, Michael Carter II, Andrew Mukuba, and Andre' Sam in the mix at safety. Of course, there is still the NFL Draft and the flexibility to add players well beyond that, look at how Epps rejoined the team just before the start of the regular season last year, as the roster-building season is truly never over.
