Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio and the rest of the coaching staff might be off for the Bye Week, but he'll have a new toy to implement when the team reconvenes next week at the NovaCare Complex.

The Eagles agreed on Wednesday to acquire cornerback Michael Carter II and a 2027 seventh-round pick in a trade with the New York Jets, pending the results of a physical. In exchange, New York will receive wide receiver John Metchie III and a 2027 sixth-round draft pick.

Here's what you need to know about the deal:

• At 5-foot-10, 184 pounds, Carter II was primarily a nickel cornerback in New York. In Philadelphia, he'll provide depth at both the nickel and safety positions.

• This move will provide additional flexibility on the back end of the defense for Fangio. Each offense in the National Football League presents a variety of challenges, and Carter II will help from a matchup standpoint.

• The Eagles now have Jakorian Bennett (designated for return from Injured Reserve), Cooper DeJean, Adoree' Jackson, Mac McWilliams, Quinyon Mitchell, Kelee Ringo, and Carter II at cornerback. At safety, Carter II adds to the mix with Reed Blankenship, Marcus Epps, Sydney Brown, and Andrew Mukuba.

• The Eagles are very high on rookie free agent wide receiver Darius Cooper. This move allows him to ascend up the depth chart as the No. 4 wide receiver behind A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Jahan Dotson. Cooper is also a valuable contributor on special teams as well.

• The 26-year-old Carter II was selected by the Jets in the fifth round (No. 154 overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Duke. Eagles Senior Personnel Director/Assistant to the General Manager Joe Douglas was the GM of the Jets when Carter II was drafted. Douglas also inked Carter II to a three-year extension through 2027 just prior to the start of the 2024 season.

"Michael is a tremendous football player and person, who is committed to his craft and this team," Douglas said at the time of the extension. "His diligent approach has spread throughout the entire defensive back unit and is a major part of the group's success. We could not be happier with him and look forward to his continued success."

• In 65 career games (25 starts), Carter II has 223 tackles, 26 passes defensed, three fumble recoveries, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and a sack.

• Carter II played in 15 games his first season and became one of three rookies and one of four Jets rookies since 2000 to record 4+ passes defensed and 4+ tackles for loss while finishing with 71 tackles. In the 2022 season, he was the only nickel corner with multiple interceptions (2) and multiple tackles for loss (3).

• Carter II was considered one of the league's best nickel cornerbacks following the 2023 season when he earned a vote for the AP All-Pro Team. Pro Football Focus graded Carter II as the second-best nickel in the NFL, only to Kansas City's Trent McDuffie, the AP All-Pro first-team selection.

• In 2023, Carter II posted career bests in receiving yards allowed (344), passer rating allowed (76.4), and completion percentage allowed (55.6 percent), while allowing just one touchdown. The Jets' defense, with Carter II's help, ranked atop the league in yards allowed per play (4.57), second in pass yards per game (168.3), and sixth in interception rate (3.26 percent).

• Carter battled through a back injury in 2024 that limited him to 13 games. He posted 24 tackles, one pass defensed, and a fumble recovery.
