Edge rusher Jonathan Greenard was added to the Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP) list Wednesday morning before the Eagles' first Training Camp practice. All players who didn't partake in June minicamp with injury (aside from safety Tucker Large, who is on the non-football injury list) were able to play on Wednesday. The Eagles are healthy for the start of Training Camp.
Highlights
- The first pass completion of team drills went to who else but rookie Makai Lemon from Jalen Hurts. The first-round pick was active in pre-snap motion for the offense and was one of the three receivers catching punts alongside Britain Covey and Elijah Moore. Lemon got a few looks on short crossing routes.
- Second-year receiver Darius Cooper made multiple difficult catches throughout the day. In 7-on-7, Jalen Hurts threw deep down the middle of the seam to Cooper, who had gotten loose in the secondary and made a spectacular diving catch to secure the big gain. During the second team period, Cooper continued to show off his hands, adjusting well to a low ball.
- Running back Dameon Pierce was able to break a long run into the secondary during the third team period. Will Shipley lined up at split-back with Tanner McKee at quarterback. Pierce made an inside read off a key block by right guard Drew Kendall, made a strong cut, and ran up the field.
- Quez Watkins made an impressive grab out of the air on a high ball thrown by rookie Cole Payton. Britain Covey went in motion off play-action before the snap. Watkins ran a deep crossing route to the right side of the field and leaped over his defender for a 30-yard gain.
- Hurts was able to throw over a lurking Zack Baun to find Dontayvion Wicks on a deep comeback route against Riq Woolen for an 18-yard gain.
- On one of the first plays in team drills, outside linebacker Jalyx Hunt dropped in coverage and was almost able to intercept Hurts on a throw intended for Wicks, breaking up the pass.
- On a deep in-route, 6-foot-6 Johnny Wilson used his height to grab a deep ball out of the air thrown by Andy Dalton. Wilson ran a 15-yard in-route and Dalton was able to deliver right over the middle of the field.
- Hurts made a perfect throw deep to DeVonta Smith who got the advantage on his defender with a well-run post route. Smith made a difficult catch look easy and was able to use his speed to break down the field.
After practice, Hurts described Smith as "smooth" and said that he "has always been very polished."
Other observations from the first day of practice
- Jalen Carter lined up alongside longtime Georgia and Eagles teammate Jordan Davis following his four-year contract extension that reportedly made him the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history.
- Running back Tank Bigsby had a great start to Training Camp, breaking multiple runs into the secondary. He rotated frequently with Saquon Barkley during first-team reps.
- Listed as a fullback, Carson Steele and running back Dameon Pierce were both getting reps at RB No. 3.
- Andrew Mukuba and Marcus Epps were the two starting safeties for first-team reps. However, whenever DeJean lined up at one of the safety spots, Mukuba would be the other safety on the field. Michael Carter II was playing more at safety than cornerback, with some appearances at nickel.
- Undrafted rookie Joshua Weru, a Kenyan rugby player out of the NFL's International Pathway Program, was getting special teams reps rushing the punter.
- Quarterbacks Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee rotated as the second-team quarterback during team drills.
- Wicks lined up against All-Pro cornerback Quinyon Mitchell all day and the battle between the two is something to keep an eye on as Training Camp progresses.
