Packers vs. Eagles: A.J. Brown 'excited' for Sunday's Wild Card Round showdown

January 10

3:26 PM: Cleared from concussion protocol – his first-ever concussion – and set to play against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday after a full week of practice, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts spoke on Friday afternoon at the NovaCare Complex and expressed confidence that he was ready to go – really ready to go – after the last two-plus games after suffering a concussion in the first quarter of the loss at the Washington Commanders.

"I feel ready to go," Hurts said. "Being around the guys, it's been a great week."

Hurts said "the main thing" is the team the Eagles are about to play, the Packers. He said he was "thankful" for the way the situation was handled in the game at Washington, and now it is time to focus on Green Bay. He said that "we are not the same team they saw in Brazil," and he acknowledged that the Packers have changed a lot as well.

"Clean, fundamentally sound football" is the key, Hurts said. Green Bay's defense, he said, flies to the football and, given the success the Packers have had taking the football away (31, fourth in the NFL), he's correct. "They're a really good defense," Hurts said.

2:43 PM: There is not a doubt in his mind, says wide receiver A.J. Brown, about playing on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Wild Card Playoff game at Lincoln Financial Field.

"We going," Brown said from his locker at the NovaCare Complex on Friday after practice.

"I'm OK. Tough at times but I'm OK."

Brown said the knee injury is "something I've been dealing with," but did not elaborate.

The second-team All-Pro wide receiver said he is "excited" to get out there and ball against the Packers.

"I'm excited for the opportunity," he said. "It's a great opponent. It's gonna come down to making plays. It's gonna come down to little details, but most importantly, I'm excited. The atmosphere is going to be crazy."

Brown credited the athletic training staff for getting him ready to go, said he's taken part in walkthroughs and playbook work, and has done extra cardio work to prepare for the game to "try to take stress off of myself. When I'm out there, like today (at practice), I go."

1:23 PM: The Eagles announced a series of roster moves on Friday afternoon. The team signed tackle/guard Brett Toth to the active roster from the practice squad. To make room for Toth, offensive lineman Jack Driscoll was placed on Injured Reserve. With an open spot on the practice squad, the Eagles brought back wide receiver Joseph Ngata.

12:20 PM: Head Coach Nick Sirianni said that quarterback Jalen Hurts has cleared the concussion protocol. Hurts was a full participant in Thursday's practice and is on track to return Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

"He has made it through the protocol," Sirianni said. "He's had a good week of practice. Really good week."

10:10 PM: Saquon Barkley is preparing for his second playoff experience, having played with the Giants and reaching the postseason in the 2022 season. New York went to Minnesota and defeated the Vikings in the Wild Card Weekend that year and then came to Lincoln Financial Field and fell to the Eagles, 38-7.

It was a learning moment for Barkley, who brings that with him into Sunday's game against Green Bay in South Philadelphia.

"First time I ever went, it was definitely a cool experience," said Barkley, who rushed for 61 yards on 9 carries against the Eagles, with a long carry of 39 yards. "Obviously, it didn't turn out the way I would like it, unfortunately losing here in the Divisional (Round). We went to Minnesota that year and played a really good team and having to win a game (31-24, with Barkley rushing for 53 yards and 2 touchdowns on 9 carries and adding 56 yards on 5 receptions) in a hostile environment gives you that college feel to it. The biggest takeaway I had from that, there was a run I had (the 39-yarder) against Philly in the Divisional, it was kind of late in the game (third quarter, by which time the Eagles led 28-0) – maybe it makes a difference, maybe not, probably not – where I think it was (Eagles safety Marcus) Epps kind of tripped my footing.

"Those runs, this year, have been 60-yarders and 70-yarders. I went into that offseason knowing that I probably wasn't ready for that moment and using that offseason to prepare for the whole season, also getting into the playoffs when it matters most – staying fresh. It's also helpful when you have great coaches – Jemal (Singleton, assistant head coach/running backs coach) doing a really good job with my rep count ... the strength guys and the trainers here taking care of my body for this little run we're hopefully about to go on." – Dave Spadaro

7:47 PM: What are the important factors that lead to a playoff win in the NFL? Certainly, everything matters and every mistake is magnified. But for a player like right tackle Lane Johnson, the difference between a win and a loss can often boil down to a few things that are measurable.

"The quality of the teams you are playing are up there, but I think the big thing is to limit turnovers and take away the football, so really, a lot of times when we're in our meetings the biggest thing we talk about is turnover differential," Johnson said. "Are we protecting the football offensively? Are we taking it away defensively? We look at that. We look at explosive play differential.

"We try not to think about the outcome. We try to think about what we're doing today. Are we attacking the practice? You develop those habits, and when pressure is applied, your habits will carry you through the game. For us, we play up to a certain standard and your standard should be how you practice every day." – Dave Spadaro

5:56 PM: The Eagles announced their injury report for Thursday. Quarterback Jalen Hurts improved to a full participant – a very positive sign after practicing in a limited capacity on Wednesday in his first practice back since suffering a concussion on December 22 in Washington. However, wide receiver A.J. Brown (knee/rest) did not practice.

2:37 PM: The Eagles re-signed quarterback Ian Book to the practice squad. To make room for him, the team released defensive back Mekhi Garner. Book was on the active roster for the final two regular-season games with both Jalen Hurts and Kenny Pickett injured. – Chris McPherson

12:45 PM: Mekhi Becton was a first-round pick of the New York Jets in 2020. Becton will be playing in a playoff game for the first time this Sunday in his first season with the Eagles.

"Just going through the trials and tribulations that I had to go through in my life and my career. I overcame a lot of things that a lot of people don't know about, but they think they know about. I overcame that and it was pretty dope just to overcome that," Becton said about that viral moment of winning the NFC East title.

"It (the emotions) lasted all the way into the locker room, I hugged a few guys, then I wiped my tears and was like, 'It is what it is, I want something bigger.'" – Liam Wichser

7 PM: Linebacker Nakobe Dean has watched the Week 1 victory over Green Bay, played way back in September in Brazil, and, yeah, he's pleased the Eagles pulled out the win. But there have been times, Dean admits, when what he saw wasn't pretty.

"We made some good plays, but there were a lot of plays it was like, 'Awwwww.' Made me want to throw up, in a sense," Dean said, laughing. "We weren't playing to our standard that we had to build throughout the year for ourselves."

In that game, Green Bay rang up 414 total net yards and had seven plays of 20-plus yards – four of which were plays of 30-plus yards. The Eagles, of course, righted the ship and built the No. 1 defense in the NFL through the course of the season.

"I feel like we, as a defense, have come a long way," Dean said. "The pride we take in everything as far as stopping the run, stopping the pass, our technique, our tackling, the fundamentals, things like that, I feel like we all have come far in every type of way." – Dave Spadaro

5:46 PM: The Eagles released their first injury report of the week and quarterback Jalen Hurts was officially limited as he continues to progress through the NFL's concussion protocol. This was Hurts' first practice since suffering the concussion on December 22 in Washington.

"It was cool to have him out there. It's always good to have your QB1 back. It was dope," guard Mekhi Becton said. "He looked great. He looked like Jalen."

5:33 PM: From the how-quickly-things-change department, newest Eagle Lewis Cine had his first practice as an Eagle after the team signed him from the Buffalo Bills' practice squad and the young safety said he is "ready to help any way I can" as the postseason begins. Cine, a first-round draft pick of Minnesota (No. 32 overall) in 2022, knows very well what the Eagles are all about.

He played his college football at Georgia. Understand?

"Oh, I've been in touch with all the guys here (Cine is one of six former Georgia players on the current roster) and they've told me how great it is," Cine said on Wednesday in the locker room at the NovaCare Complex. "Great energy, a lot of success, and they have that winning culture. I'm excited to be here."

Cine was a top prospect with Minnesota and then suffered a gruesome lower-leg injury returning a punt in his rookie season – he suffered a fractured fibula and tibia and a dislocated ankle – that derailed his career. Cine has been on Buffalo's practice squad all season and the Eagles, who scouted him heavily for that '22 NFL Draft, added him to the 53-man roster spot after releasing quarterback Ian Book on Tuesday.

"You have to be ready at all times," said Cine, who contributed primarily on special teams in his time with the Vikings. "I feel great and I'm ready to get in here and learn. I've talked to the guys about how they do things here and it is very specific, and I look forward to really digging in. It's a new beginning for me and I intend to take advantage of it." – Dave Spadaro

1:48 PM: The Eagles announced a pair of roster moves ahead of Wednesday's practice. The team signed defensive back Lewis Cine, a former first-round pick, to the active roster. He was on the Buffalo Bills' practice squad. The Eagles also opened the 21-day practice window for defensive tackle Byron Young, who has been on Injured Reserve since October 25 with a hamstring injury. – Chris McPherson

12:12 PM: Head Coach Nick Sirianni said quarterback Jalen Hurts will participate in practice on Wednesday. Practice is scheduled to begin at Lincoln Financial Field at 3:35 PM. The team will release an injury report later in the day to disclose the amount of participation Hurts has in practice. This is Hurts' first practice since he suffered a concussion against Washington on December 22.

Coach Sirianni is not concerned about the layoff going into the Wild Card matchup with the Packers.

"This is why you practice. This is why you go through the process of practicing and all of the things you do at practice to get on the same page to do everything there," Sirianni said. "We feel like we practice at a high-intensity level. This is why you go out there and do these things."

Typically, the Eagles would practice at the NovaCare Complex, but the field is frozen, so the heated grass at Lincoln Financial Field provides a more playable surface. Sirianni is adamant that he wants to practice outside unless the elements are too severe.

"We play outside," Sirianni said. "Unless it's a torrential downpour or the wind's completely out of control, we're going to go outside." – Chris McPherson

January 7

4:53 PM: The Eagles waived QB Ian Book, opening a spot on the 53-man active roster. Book served as a backup quarterback for the final two games of the regular season with the injuries to Jalen Hurts (concussion) and Kenny Pickett (ribs).

January 6

4:28 PM: Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur confirmed that wide receiver Christian Watson will miss the remainder of the season with a non-contact knee injury suffered in Sunday's loss to the Chicago Bears.

"Yeah, it's not good," LaFleur said when asked for an update on Monday. "It's a big-time loss. Just his presence on the field alone. He's so versatile in his ability to play multiple (wide receiver) positions. You can put him at the X, the F, the Z. You can move him all over the place. Obviously, he's got an element in terms of his size and speed that's tough to replicate. There's not many built like him around the league. I hurt for him because I know how much he's put into this thing."

Watson had 620 receiving yards and two touchdowns on just 29 receptions in 2024, averaging 21.4 yards per catch. One of those touchdowns came in the regular-season opener against the Eagles (he had three catches for 13 yards). The third-year receiver was rated by NFL Next Gen Stats as the most athletic wide receiver at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine. The 6-foot-4, 208-pound Watson ran a 4.36 in the 40-yard dash in Indianapolis before being selected by Green Bay in the second round.

3:30 PM: Head Coach Nick Sirianni provided a one-liner when updating the status of quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is in the NFL's concussion protocol, at his virtual press conference on Monday.

"I have no new information for you guys," he said.

That's the same line Sirianni provided reporters following Sunday's 20-13 regular-season-ending win over the Giants, which provided the Eagles with a franchise-record-tying 14th win. The Eagles return to the practice field on Wednesday.

Earlier in the press conference, Sirianni was asked about the backup quarterback situation as well. Kenny Pickett did not practice all week due to injured ribs, while Tanner McKee performed well in his first NFL regular-season start, completing 27 of 41 passes for 269 yards with two touchdowns and no turnover for a 100.6 QB rating against the Giants.

"I've got a lot of confidence in both of the guys," Sirianni said. "I think when Kenny's had to play, he's played really well. When Tanner's had to play, he's played really well. We got a really good room. Obviously, Jalen had an outstanding season. We just have a great room. Credit to Howie (Roseman, Executive Vice President/General Manager) and his staff of getting those guys in here and just a great job by these guys in taking advantage of their opportunities. Great job by Kellen (Moore, Offensive Coordinator), Kevin (Patullo, Associate Head Coach/Passing Game Coordinator), Doug (Nussmeier, Quarterbacks Coach) helping these guys develop. We feel really, really good about the room of where we are." – Chris McPherson
