How the Eagles Go Green every day

Here are 10 ways the Eagles put an emphasis on sustainability throughout the year.

Walk into Lincoln Financial Field or the Jefferson Health Training Complex, and it's hard to miss the Eagles' emphasis on sustainability.

While April 22 is known globally as Earth Day, the Eagles are committed to helping the environment 365 days a year as part of their Go Green initiative.

As Vice President of Fan Experience and Sustainability Norman Vossschulte puts it, "To me, it's more of an activity day, where I think the rest of the year is an Earth Day."

The Eagles are one of the premier organizations in sports when it comes to supporting sustainability. It's something that is emphasized from Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie down through the rest of the organization.

Vossschulte works daily on the countless initiatives the Eagles have in place, and having the support from Lurie makes Go Green an organization-wide priority.

"I think buy-in from every department," Vossschulte said about what makes this possible. "Go Green is so much a part of what we do that there really is never a question of, 'Hey, let's invite me and or our program to the table when we discuss new partnerships with corporate partners, when we discuss initiatives, when we discuss events, when we discuss FIFA and the World Cup coming.' I never feel like there's pushback.

"I think the reason why this all works is complete buy-in from every department internally. Because of the heavy buy-in internally, I think we have great interest externally because our partners at this point know that we are heavily invested in sustainability."

As part of 2026 Earth Day, the Eagles are doing tree planting and cleanup at FDR Park. It's a great opportunity to give back externally, but sustainability initiatives for the Eagles aren't limited to just one day.

"I'm really proud of sustainability being a talking point in all of our organization," Vossschulte said. "Every one of us can volunteer every day to make a better decision. We can decide, I'm going to bring my reusable cup and I'm not going to use a plastic water bottle. We can decide when I do drink a Gatorade, I'm going to take the bottle cap off and put it in the recyclable container at Jefferson and at the stadium. I think there are ways that everyone can participate every day in making those personal choices, even outside of the organization. Maybe if your grocery store still has plastic bags, maybe you bring your own shopping bags. It's little decisions like that that can have a big impact if all of us do them.

"I'm really proud that everyone in the organization understands that we have a very strong Go Green program and that it's important to us. And that it isn't just a program that one department does."

In light of Earth Day, here are 10 ways the Eagles emphasize sustainably daily:

1. Green Energy Production

  • The Eagles have enjoyed a sustainable energy partnership with NRG since March 2012. Here are some numbers to know:
  • 10,456 solar panels at the stadium complex
  • 32.1 GWh generated since 2013
  • 44,895,000+ lb. of carbon offset since 2013
  • The project produces around four megawatts (4,000 kw) of clean energy each year
  • The solar panels produce about 40% of the stadium's energy annually and renewable energy credits are purchased to offset the rest

2. Closed Loop Recycling

  • Through the energy-from-waste program, and with the help of partners and fans, the Eagles divert more than 99% of their waste from landfills
  • The team annually recycles more than 1,000 tons of aluminum, glass, plastic, and organic waste from landfills
  • Stadium staff manually sort recyclables, and an on-site compactor crushes aluminum so the metal can be sold for recycling
  • On average, the Eagles recycle three tons of food a week (event week) for composting and a half ton of aluminum. That equates to the weight of one adult African elephant (adult males weigh between 4-7 tons)
  • A new trash compactor was added to scale back the number of trash pick-ups. It reduced the number from 7x per week to 1x every 3-4 weeks
  • As a recycling partner, Braskem developed a closed loop recycling program for bottle caps and other plastic products
  • The bottle caps that Braskem collects are repurposed into various products
  • Made bikes out of recycled bottle caps to use in EAC
  • Replica Lombardi Trophy on display in Pepsi Plaza
  • Park benches that are donated during team park clean up events
  • Used shrink wrap is put into energy bags and melted down into pellets that are then used in dry wall
  • Broken stadium seats are melted down and recycled
  • At each home game, fans are encouraged to use numerous recycling containers, which have been strategically placed throughout the stadium. They can receive prizes for doing so

3. Energy Conservation and Efficiency

  • Over the years, the following measures have been taken to fulfill the Eagles' goal of becoming a more energy-efficient organization:
  • Switched out lights around the stadium to LED and fluorescent light alternatives
  • Includes locker room lights at Lincoln Financial Field and Jefferson Health Training Complex. Has reduced electrical consumption by 66%
  • Tied lights and HVAC to timers and sensors, preventing unnecessary energy usage
  • Light, heat, cooling timers, and occupancy sensors
  • Replacing lights with lower wattage substitutes
  • Tied the stadium scoreboard to a building automation system, which sends a text message notification if it remains on after 9 PM.
  • In September 2023, the Eagles entered into a multi-year partnership with Sportsbeams, an award-winning tech company renowned for its cutting-edge LED lighting solutions. With the help of Sportsbeams, the Eagles replaced the stadium's field lights with the company's patented, high-powered LED lighting technology
  • Each light is 1,500 watts for a total of 726,000 watts, achieving nearly a 50% wattage reduction from before

4. Water Conservation

  • Water filtration fountains were installed at both Lincoln Financial Field and the Jefferson Health Training Complex
  • Removed water bottles from the press box, saving approx. 10,000 water bottles per season (1,000 per game) … Replaced with aluminum cups that are then compacted onsite and recycled
  • Rain sensors are located in the irrigation systems that shut off the water when enough rain has fallen. It also takes into account the time of year, humidity, and temperature to adjust the amount of water for grass and landscaping purposes
  • Automatic alerts are sent to Vice President of Grounds Tony Leonard if the sprinklers are on at the wrong times or activated too long
  • Simultaneous flush urinals throughout LFF saves more than 5,000 gallons of water per event

The Eagles organization gathered at FDR Park in South Philadelphia near the team's headquarters and stadium to plant trees in commemoration of Earth Day.

5. Team Travel Offset

  • The Eagles' team travel is tracked throughout the season, and the team purchases carbon credits to help offset the travel
  • In 2022, the team partnered with The Ocean Foundation and Ocean Conservancy to restore seagrass and mangroves in Puerto Rico's Jobos Bay National Research Reserve

6. Clean Fuel

  • The Jefferson Health Training Complex has implemented electric car charging stations for eco-friendly vehicles

7. Community Clean Up Events

  • Throughout Earth Week and during the regular season, the Eagles and partners team up for park clean ups in the Philadelphia area, including Tyler Arboretum, FDR Park, Strawberry Mansion Green Resource Center, and more.
  • Plant trees and food forests, remove invasive species, pick up trash, and install raised bed gardens

8. Green Product Purchasing

  • Cleaning products are made from environmentally friendly product lines
  • Plates and flatware used at the Jefferson Health Training Complex are biodegradable
  • Switched from plastic coffee stirrers to wood
  • The stadium features carpets made from recycled fibers, and eco-friendly paint is used to coat the walls
  • With Aramark's help in 2018, the Eagles became the first team in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex to phase out traditional plastic straws for plastic alternatives made from 100% renewable resources. This helps eliminate roughly 500,000 plastic straws annually
  • With the help of Braskem, the Eagles purchased sustainable rain ponchos produced by GreenGear Supply Company. The ponchos were made from sugarcane ethanol, a renewable raw material that has a carbon-negative life cycle. The ponchos can be reused or recycled through the Go Green program

9. Reforestation

  • As part of the team's multi-year sustainability partnership with West, 30 trees are planted for every successful field goal made by the Eagles each season through the "West Field Goal Forest" program. Over 2,400 trees have been planted since 2023

10. LEED Platinum Status

  • In June 2024, Lincoln Financial Field was certified as a LEED Platinum building for its commitment to operational sustainability. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the most widely used green building rating system in the world
  • Lincoln Financial Field is one of only two previously constructed stadiums in the National Football League to achieve Platinum status – the highest of all LEED certifications – and the only one that is more than 10 years old
