Spadaro: The Eagles are always looking for ways to get better

Howie Roseman is far from finished when it comes to assembling the 2026 Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles roster, less than one month before the 2026 NFL Draft, is a work in progress. Take the safety room, one that has already experienced significant change.

Howie Roseman sees it for what it is: An opportunity to improve after some additions (J.T. Gray, maybe Jonathan Jones), some retentions (Marcus Epps, Michael Carter) and some departures (Reed Blankenship, Sydney Brown).

"We drafted Drew (Mukuba) last year in the second round for a reason. We think he has tremendous potential to really make a difference," Roseman said prior to his trip to Arizona for the NFL Annual Meeting. "This is going to be a big offseason for him. We know that. In the NFL, going from your first season to your second season is big and players look to make that important jump. We think he's ready to do that.

"Bringing Marcus Epps back is good for us. He has played really good football for us over two different stints. He has leadership, he plays with good instincts, and he's a plus for us in the defensive backfield. Andre' Sam has been on our practice squad the last couple of years, and we think he can take another jump. We signed J.T. Gray, who we think is one of the best special teams players in the National Football League, and he will be given a chance to contribute on defense.

"We also have versatility. We have a bunch of guys in our defensive backfield starting with who we think might be the most versatile player in the NFL in Cooper DeJean, who really can play anywhere. He obviously can play outside corner, he can play nickel, he can play safety. We re-signed Michael Carter, who we think has the skill set to not only play nickel, but also the safety position. He has unique cover skills as a safety, toughness, physicality. And we feel the same about Jonathan Jones, who signed in free agency. He is an experienced player throughout the secondary.

"And look, it's March. We're going to look to improve every single position on our roster. I don't think there is any position where we say, 'No, we don't want a good football player.' That certainly includes the safety positions."

So, what do the Eagles have planned moving forward? The usual: Challenge every part of an already-strong roster and make it as great as it can be.

Having been awarded four compensatory draft picks by the NFL, the Eagles now have nine total selections starting on April 23, starting with the 23rd pick in the first round.

"It's hard losing players in free agency and last year after winning the Super Bowl, we lost some key players who helped us win a World Championship. We value all of them and appreciate everything they've given to the Philadelphia Eagles," Roseman said. "We knew last year – and this year, for that matter – it would be hard to retain all of those players. But when you lose players, the NFL's system is that you can acquire compensatory draft picks and we will use them any way we can. That can be making those picks, using them to move up in a round, using them in trades for players. It is great ammunition to have with the NFL Draft approaching."

Roseman understands that the roster is evolving and, truly, will never stop doing so. The "State of the Eagles," then, is never complete.

"It's hard to really take stock of where we are because we have so much room to grow. We have so many areas of opportunity that are upcoming," Roseman said. "My mindset is not taking a step back and assessing where we are and where we've been, it's about where we're going. The next month is a crucial month for us with the NFL Draft process. We're continuing to monitor free agency and trade opportunities, and we are looking for any and every way to improve. That won't stop. We want to put together the best 90-man roster we possibly can and that is looking for incremental upgrades at every position on this roster."
