Spadaro: The NFL Draft is over, but the work is far from finished

Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman and Head Coach Nick Sirianni will take a moment to recalibrate the plans to continue shaping the roster as the offseason program is in full swing.

The hot takes are out there and you should take them for all they are worth – entertainment, but not much else. There is, inside the Jefferson Health Training Complex, no rush to judgment. The Eagles completed their 2026 NFL Draft on Saturday evening and then entered the non-drafted frenzy and counted themselves as, well, let's hear from Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman on that.

"I'm very comfortable with where we are as a football team right now and understanding that there is more work to be done," Roseman said.

Much of the reaction, truth be told, is, in the exact words from Roseman: "We'll see. We gotta get these guys on the grass (practice field at The Jeff) and see how it all comes together. Everyone that we signed, I tell our players all the time, there is no allocation draft in the National Football League. Everyone that is on this team, we've chosen. We've chosen because we have a level of like of their skill set of the person, so from our perspective, we brought all those guys in because we think they can do some things for our team.

"We haven't had one practice on the field yet, so it remains to be seen how it all comes together."

At the same time, the Eagles' football staff – and all of them, all of them play a part in the roster-building process here – took a deep breath after it was all done and order restored and Sunday was a day off (for some) and understood that they really felt good about the way the offseason has come together.

There have been some challenges, for sure. Significant coaching changes. Long tenures ended with new beginnings underway. Roster turnover, as is usual in the Not-For-Long League. But the blueprint that Roseman and Co. put together looks pretty darn good at this point.

The Eagles addressed key positions heavily – wide receiver, tight end, the secondary, edge on defense, more young offensive linemen, and even the quarterback room. A roster that was playoff-caliber heading into the offseason has a great blend of veteran talent returning and the mix of experienced new players who have done it at a high level in this league with a Draft Weekend Class that will challenge to make an impact.

With that, there is work to do, as Roseman said, and flexibility to do that work. The Eagles are going to continue to be aggressive, you know that. If there is an opportunity to add, Roseman will add. He did it in free agency and he did it trading draft picks for wide receivers Dontayvion Wicks and Makai Lemon and outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard, whom the Eagles promptly signed to a long-term contract extension through the 2029 season.

"I feel really good about the decision we made to trade up for Makai. I feel really good about the decision we made to bring in JG, Jon here to Philly," Roseman said. "Obviously, it's got to play out. There is no guarantee about anything. But, definitely no regrets.

"I feel like the impact that we can get from the decisions we made could really push us forward in a positive way."

Cole Payton

The Eagles kicked off the 2026 NFL Draft by moving up three spots in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys to select WR Makai Lemon with the 20th overall pick.

There are so many intriguing storylines for this football team, right? The quarterback position has three veterans and a rookie in Cole Payton, an athletic young man from North Dakota State.

The wide receiver room is absolutely loaded, so how will that shake out? Tight end, the same. The Eagles have a bunch of edge rushers for Vic Fangio's defense, and that's fun to see. The offense is looking to develop some young offensive linemen as, let's face it, a transition of sorts could be taking place in the trenches.

A Nigerian from the International Pathways Program, Uar Bernard, is a defensive tackle with freak athletic ability who has never played the game. "A blank slate that you are able to teach things to," Head Coach Nick Sirianni said. Could he be? Will he be the next …"

Time will tell. It always does.

"I think I probably need to get some perspective on that, to answer that question accurately," Roseman said when asked what he thinks he's accomplished to this point in terms of the roster. "I will take some time and put together a plan on how to address some things. Again, our work isn't done. We're not going on vacation. We're going to do whatever we can to put the best possible team forward."

No hot takes, then. Just reality. Everyone feels good right now, but a team that understands the path to the top also knows a new challenge is around the corner every day. The work continues at the Jefferson Health Training Complex.
