FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – In Week 2 of this 2026 Eagles preseason, there was a lot to like.
Not the way it ended, with a New England touchdown pass in the final minute to snatch away the victory, 24-21, at Gillette Stadium, but in so many more important moments, the Eagles emerged with some outstanding plusses.
Let's take a look at what stood out for the Eagles on Saturday night ...
1. Let's start with Will Shipley, one of the underrated players on this roster. He is one of those guys who just does everything the right way. In his third season, Shipley has added pop as he finishes his runs, he sees the field very well, and he is a multi-purpose back. Shipley also serves as the personal protector in the punting game, covers on special teams, and can catch the football. He ran hard and well in this game, gaining 56 yards and a nice touchdown run early. The backfield here is loaded with Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, and Shipley. Will the Eagles carry more in the backfield? We find out in one week ...
2. Along that theme, give some credit here to Carson Steele, who is going to get attention for the two hurdles he executed in the game at New England, but he did so much more than that. Steele gained 33 yards on 12 carries and showed his versatility with 6 receptions for 84 yards and a score. Good stuff. He's a physical guy, a good blocker, and he plays on special teams. Can he do enough to push hard for a roster spot?
3. The offensive line was very impressive, particularly in the run game. Third-round draft pick Markel Bell continues to impress. Drew Kendall is having a terrific spring and summer – he's a player and maybe the most improved player on the roster. Willie Lampkin has opened eyes with his technique and his drive and the way he has played center and guard. Fred Johnson mauled guys in this game. The whole line – kudos. And in the big picture, the young linemen are serving notice that depth is going to be strong up front.
4. The quarterbacks played well in this game. Andy Dalton started and moved the football and put up a touchdown on one of his three drives. Tanner McKee played most of the way and looked really good, completing 16 of 22 passes for 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He was slinging it. Cole Payton came in for the final drive and was sacked and lost the football to end any chance the Eagles had to tie or win the game.
5. Darius Cooper – three catches, 44 yards, and a good job of gaining yards after the catch. He's had a fine summer. Stone Smartt showed how athletic he can be as a pass catcher, grabbing five passes for 37 yards. He's a big-bodied tight end who can win in the passing game.
6. Big number: Just 6 penalties called against the Eagles – only two in the first half – after being whistled for 10 penalties in the game at Baltimore.
7. A big shoutout to defensive tackle Uar Bernard, who had a solo tackle (and then bounced up and down in the huddle on the field because it felt so good!) and an assist.
8. Braden Mann is primed. He averaged 46 yards on four punts with one inside the 20-yard line on a drizzly, bleak night, with a 42-yard net average.
9. For a second straight game, Ty Robinson played "wow" football. He recorded two quarterback sacks, had three tackles for loss, was physical, very fast off the football, and he's just come such a long way since his rookie season. And you can see that he is playing with so ... much ... confidence. What a difference a year makes!
10. After battling an injury much of the summer, seventh-round draft pick Cole Wisniewski returned to the practice field during the week and then played well in the game with three tackles on defense and one tackle on special teams. This sets up as a really big week for Wisniewski and for a huge chunk of this roster heading into Tuesday's Public Practice at Lincoln Financial Field followed by Friday's preseason finale against Cincinnati.
It's Eagles at Patriots as the defending AFC Champions host the reigning NFC East titleists in an exhibition clash. There's a lot of history between these two teams. Who will help their stock for a roster spot with cutdown day fast approaching?
