DeSean Jackson, Michael Vick preview 'historic' HBCU showdown on October 30

DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick attended Tuesday's practice and caught up with Jalen Hurts afterwards.

For a moment after Tuesday's practice at the NovaCare Complex, it looked like the clock turned back to 2010.

Michael Vick, with a flick of the left wrist, lofted the ball down the sideline for DeSean Jackson to run under and haul it in.

The former teammates share a special bond, a brotherhood, that has carried over since their time together in Midnight Green, when they formed one of the league's most dynamic QB-WR combinations.

But for one spectacular night, on Thursday, October 30, the teammates will become rivals as Vick's Norfolk State Spartans travel to take on Jackson's Delaware State Hornets at Lincoln Financial Field.

"Our city is no stranger to hosting world-class events. This game is going to be on and lit on October 30 with no exception," said Jazelle Jones, City of Philadelphia's City Representative and Director of the Office of Special Events. "This is a world-class stage for two incredible teams to not only showcase their grit and talent, but to provide these student-athletes with incredible networking opportunities that will inspire, empower, and help shape their future."

"This is historic for the MEAC Conference in their 55th year. It's historic for the people of Delaware and the people of Virginia, in addition to Norfolk State University and the great Delaware State University," said Delaware Governor Matt Meyer.

When/where is the game?

The Delaware State Hornets will host the Norfolk State Spartans at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday, October 30. Tickets can be purchased here.

What can fans expect?

Jackson: "The Linc gets crazy already. Now you've got two Legends, it's going to be hype. There's going to be a lot of conversations before the game, but during the game, we aren't going to talk. It's going to be heated. I know how he is and I know how I am. It's going to be a lot of energy. October 30 is going to be huge."

Vick: "I think they can expect excitement. DeSean and I are excited about what we're doing in life right now. God has been good to us, and we get to pour into these young men and teach them. We played at the highest level and we're just trying to pass it down. We're both competitors and we're going to push our guys to the edge. This is a chance for us to put what we've learned over the past year on display."

What does it mean to have Philadelphia embrace and celebrate this HBCU showdown?

Vick: "That's not surprising at all. The City of Philadelphia, despite the things we did on the field, it was more so about the things we did off the field. DeSean was always in the community doing outreach. I was always trying to do some form of outreach. Even though we had success on the field, we had a great time, we were always thinking about giving back. That was always a priority and people in this organization made it a priority."

Step onto the practice field for Tuesday's session, which had Eagles Legends Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson in attendance. Vick and Jackson are both first-year head coaches whose respective teams (Norfolk State and Delaware State) will play at Lincoln Financial Field on October 30.

Why enter the coaching profession?

Vick: "It's great being able to go back home (to Virginia), first and foremost, and have an opportunity to touch so many kids in that area, an area where I grew up, dreaming of playing professional sports, and now I get to do it in real time. I get to be close to family and try to push to accomplish more things in football. I didn't win a championship on a professional level. Got close in college. It's been a long time since I celebrated, so I just wanted to try to chase that feeling again.

"Football is in our blood. Mentorship is in our blood. Leadership, creating men of character, that's all we were taught from the age of 7 up until now when I'm speaking it every day. We had coaches who poured into us. As players, you think back to how you got to this point and then you think about all of the people who poured into your life and all of the mentorship that you had and the people that really cared. We got an opportunity to reciprocate that."

Jackson: "Since day one, when I came in there, I had to address the culture. I had to get the right kind of guys in there. For me, it's all about discipline, it's about a mindset. At the end of the day, everybody is not going to be fortunate enough to make it to the NFL, so to be able to say that you can get guys to walk across that stage and get a degree, a diploma, is what I want to instill in these young men."

When does the season begin?

DeSean Jackson's Delaware State Hornets open the season against their in-state rivals, the Delaware Blue Hens, on Thursday, August 28 at 7 PM.

Michael Vick's Norfolk State Spartans host the Towson University Tigers at the same date and time.
