Running back Matthew Tucker has scored four touchdowns in the preseason. He's gained a combined 7 yards on those four plays.
Tucker's two touchdowns helped put the game out of reach as the Eagles beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-21 on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field. As the third running back for the Eagles, Tucker cashed in twice from the 1-yard line.
While leading the league in preseason rushing touchdowns should go a long way in helping Tucker's case to make this Eagles team, he is focused on showcasing his overall game.
"I'm not worried about the touchdowns. I'm going to keep pushing," Tucker said. "I'm not really there yet. I'm not where I want to be. I've got to keep on pushing for next game."
Head coach Chip Kelly said after the win that the team's depth at running back is so strong that it's uncertain whom the third running back behind LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles will be.
"We're deep. We've got about six backs. Anybody can be gone," Tucker said. "You've got to keep on pushing, working hard and competing."
The 6-foot-1, 227-pound Tucker was originally signed by the Eagles as a rookie free agent last year out of TCU. He was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster in October and played in two games.
"I would love to make this Eagles team. I was here last year. It's my second year here. It depends on what the coaches need," Tucker said.
Tucker has proven to be a proficient short-yardage back as evidenced by his four touchdowns, but is that enough? Or will his work in the pass game and on special teams help him earn a roster spot?
