Peters' Pro Bowl Streak Continues

Pro Bowl recognition is nothing new for Eagles left tackle Jason Peters. As of Tuesday, the 6-4, 328-pound Peters is now officially a Pro Bowler for the fifth consecutive season, joining Joe Thomas of the Cleveland Browns as the only two current offensive tackles to accomplish that feat.

But while the Pro-Bowl nod may seem old-hat for Peters, this year has been a different one for the converted tight end. Throughout his career, Peters has proved his ability to adjust. First, it was the initial position switch with the Buffalo Bills that he took to quite well. Then, Peters' Pro Bowl streak continued despite changing teams when he was traded from the Bills to the Eagles prior to the 2009 season. This year, another challenge was issued to Peters, as he was forced to adjust to a brand new offensive line scheme under legendary coach Howard Mudd. The results? Ask the coach.

"If anyone doesn't think (Peters is the best left tackle in the league), I would categorically ask them to give me one who is as good," Mudd said. "I didn't say better. I said as good. So that puts him in a pretty rarified place."

Peters has proved to be a perfect fit for Mudd's system. As a pass blocker, Peters has once again been almost impenetrable, having allowed only three sacks on the season. The athletic Peters has also been a marvel in the Eagles' screen game, as he gets down the field better than perhaps any other lineman in the league.

"To get a big guys playing tackle that can pass protect like he does and work his way down the field," said NBC Sunday Night Football analyst Cris Collinsworth, "God didn't create many people like him."

And then there's the running game, where Peters has been the primary mauler ahead of fellow Pro Bowler LeSean McCoy's breakout season. The Eagles have run behind Peters on the left end 102 times, more than any other team in the league, for an average gain of 6.35 yards.

Simply stated, Peters is the complete package. Consider Pro Football Focus' rankings of offensive tackles, in which Peters ranks first overall with a 24.4 rating. The second-place tackle (Bryan Bulaga of the Green Bay Packers) is barely within 10 points of Peters at 14.6. Pro Football Focus also agrees with Peters' well-roundedness, scoring him at 12.4 in pass blocking and 10.6 in run blocking.

In the Eagles' pantheon of tackles, Peters joins Bucko Kilroy (1953-55) as the only Eagle to make three consecutive Pro Bowls, while Peters, Kilroy, Tra Thomas and Bob Brown have all now made three total Pro Bowls. At this rate, it would be a surprise if Peters doesn't surpass that company by this time next year.
