Spadaro: Merrill Reese takes a trip down memory lane for Cowboys vs. Eagles

The Voice of the Eagles has broadcast more than 100 games of this rivalry, providing the soundtrack for some legendary moments.

DeSean Jackson scored a 91-yard touchdown at Dallas in 2010 as part of a 210-yard performance.
DeSean Jackson scored a 91-yard touchdown at Dallas in 2010 as part of a 210-yard performance.

He has been there for more than 100 of these Eagles-Cowboys games – 102, to be exact, with 98 games between the teams in the 49 seasons he has been the Voice of the Eagles plus four times in the postseason – and the memories effortlessly roll off the tongue of the great Merrill Reese.

Monday night in Dallas, 1979, when John Walton replaced Ron Jaworski at quarterback and the offense still moved the ball and Tony Franklin boomed a 59-yard field goal (barefooted) to beat the Cowboys at Texas Stadium. January 11, 1981, the Eagles on a bitterly cold day at Veterans Stadium defeated Dallas to win the NFC Championship Game. A game in 1995 at the Vet when Dallas Head Coach Barry Switzer went for the first down twice on a fourth-and-1 play (the referees blew the first play dead for the two-minute warning) and the Eagles' defense rose to the challenge to make the stop.

On and on and on ... Too many to count, really. For Reese, and for the Eagles and for Eagles fans, any time the Eagles play the Cowboys it is a something special.

"Always a war, no matter the records," Reese said, preparing for the latest chapter on Monday night. "The hatred started in 1967 when Cowboys linebacker Lee Roy Jordan delivered an absolutely brutal hit on Timmy Brown that knocked out Brown's teeth.

"Every game is special for me, and every Eagles-Dallas game is even more special. This one, of course, the NFC East is wide open and both teams are trying to get on the right track so that is something unique about this game. It's also the Hall of Fame game and the best Owner in the history of the Philadelphia Eagles, Jeffrey Lurie, is going into the franchise's Hall of Fame. It will be a very special night."

It's Dallas Week! Check out photos from practice as running back Saquon Barkley returned to the field. The Eagles host the Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field for Monday Night Football.

Sitting with Reese for 20 minutes and talking about the history of the Eagles and Cowboys is like taking a magical trip down memory lane. He talks about the Pickle Juice Game. He tells the story of the James Willis interception in the end zone of a game in Dallas that Willis then lateraled to Troy Vincent, who completed the 104-yard return for touchdown to seal a 1996 victory – Reese couldn't identify Willis because his longtime producer, Joe McPeak, had tackled the spotter, Derek Boyko, and that mayhem blocked Reese's view of the play.

The all-time Eagles nemesis in Reese's mind? Dallas Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach, who compiled a 17-3 record against Philadelphia. The best win ever for the Eagles over Dallas? No doubt, the NFC title game that sent Philadelphia to Super Bowl XV.

Every game brings with it a chance for another turn in one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports.

"I just love it. The intensity. The fans. The players, you can just see it gets a little more emotional," Reese said. "It is something that I cherish, along with every chance I have to broadcast an Eagles game. But Dallas, it just is something different. And so on Monday night, no matter that these teams are both 2-4, it will be electric at Lincoln Financial Field."
