Howie Roseman relives some of the most impactful Eagles draft picks

From the first pick of his tenure to a trade with a division rival, the Eagles' on-field success over the past decade can be traced back to some of these key decisions.

Who will get a call from Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman this weekend, welcoming them to Philadelphia as the newest member of the Eagles?

Before the 2026 NFL Draft unfolds (first round kicks off Thursday night at 8 PM), Roseman recalled memories of some of the picks that have charted the course for the direction of the franchise.

DE Brandon Graham

2010, 13th overall pick

Howie Roseman didn't take long to establish himself as a dealmaker. Before his first pick as the Eagles' General Manager in 2010, he moved up 11 spots in the first round (from 24 to 13) in a trade with the Denver Broncos, sending back the Eagles' first-round pick and a pair of third-round selections.

With the 13th overall pick, the Eagles chose defensive end Brandon Graham, now a two-time Super Bowl Champion and franchise legend.

"What I remember is that he was a two-time team captain at the University of Michigan," Roseman said. "Watching the tape and preparing for that draft, we understood that there may be an opportunity to move up for him. We were thinking about how impactful he could be at the edge rushing position for us."

DT Fletcher Cox

2012, 12th overall pick

Roseman once again struck a deal, moving up three spots in the first round (from 15 to 12) to land one of the most impactful defensive tackles to ever wear Midnight Green. The Eagles traded their first-round pick, a fourth-round pick, and a sixth-round pick to Seattle to land the All-Pro lineman.

"That was an interesting draft because we had decided prior to the draft that we were going to try and find an impactful defensive player," Roseman said. "We were concerned that he (Cox) was going to go in the top 10. I made a trade with the Seahawks and (General Manager) John Schneider the night before that if he was there, that we were going to move up. We were just incredibly excited to get Fletch in 2012."

T Lane Johnson

2013, 4th overall pick

For the first time since 2000, the Eagles had not just a top-10 pick, but the fourth overall selection. The Eagles made the right decision, taking Oklahoma offensive tackle Lane Johnson. The longest-tenured Eagle has won two Super Bowls and been named a six-time Pro Bowl selection during his time in Philadelphia.

"Unique draft," Roseman said. "We were picking really high for the first time in my tenure (as general manager). There were three offensive tackles that everyone was talking about. We just saw that Lane had unusual ability and that really solidified the feeling of what are you getting from the player not just as a rookie, but three, four, five years down the line. We sent Stout (Jeff Stoutland) to work him out and he called me from Oklahoma, talking about how unusual Lane's traits were. I think that was the first time I heard the word unusual. What a great player."

Here are all 22 Eagles first round picks who made the Pro Bowl, from Davey O'Brien in 1939 to Quinyon Mitchell in 2024.

QB Jalen Hurts

2020, 53rd overall pick

The last quarterback prior to Jalen Hurts to win the Super Bowl as a second-round draft pick was Drew Brees with the Saints in 2010. And Brees didn't win with the team that originally drafted him. In addition to winning the Super Bowl and MVP honors in the championship game, Hurts is a three-time Pro Bowl selection whose teams have won at least 11 games in four consecutive seasons while amassing 138 total touchdowns (second in the NFL) in that span.

"I remember talking to Doug (Pederson) and Jeffrey (Lurie) and saying there's a quarterback in this draft out of Oklahoma who has a lot of the characteristics of the guys who have had success," Roseman said. "We graded him where we did and then had a lot of conversations about having other quarterbacks that we had belief in [during previous drafts] and that we waited on picking and then going before our pick. I think Jeffrey did a great job in that draft of reminding me of the things I had said and how important the position was and when you had belief in a player at that position to take that player."

WR DeVonta Smith

2021, 10th overall pick

Roseman and the Eagles acquired an extra first-round pick from the Miami Dolphins to move back from No. 6 overall to No. 12 in a pre-draft trade in 2021. But Roseman didn't sit still on Draft Day, moving up to acquire Heisman Trophy-winning wide receiver DeVonta Smith, who is the third-fastest Eagle to reach 5,000 career receiving yards in Philadelphia (80 games). A three-time 1,000-yard receiver, Smith co-authored with Hurts one of the most electric plays in team history with The Dagger in Super Bowl LIX.

The curious aspect of the move to get Smith. It's the team Roseman did business with.

"When we traded back (with Miami), it was with an understanding that we were going to try to trade back up," Roseman said. "Making that trade with Dallas (the Eagles used a third-round pick to move up two spots), we don't do a lot of trades with Dallas, but in that moment, we felt this was a player who was really going to fit for us perfectly."
