Dunlap Preparing For First Start At Guard

With Evan Mathis potentially sidelines with a turf toe injury this week against the Arizona Cardinals, the assumption was that swing tackle King Dunlap would likely be inserted into the starting lineup at right tackle while Todd Herremans, the Eagles' most versatile offensive lineman, would slide back to left guard, where he started for the Eagles over the last few seasons. But instead, it appears Dunlap himself will move to left guard, an interesting fit for the 6-foot-9 behemoth.

"Not the biggest, but I definitely could be the tallest" guard ever, Dunlap joked Wednesday.

Dunlap has started six games over the past two seasons at both tackle positions, including a standout performance earlier this season at left tackle against the Buffalo Bills. But the fourth-year pro has never played guard in a game in his life, though he has practiced at the position sporadically beginning in the tail end of last season. Dunlap said that "as far as I know," he'll be starting this week, adding that he'll be "guarding it up."

"You just have to bend a little bit more. That's all it is, nothing new," Dunlap said. "I'll just try to keep it the same, fill in like I did before at tackle, keep the offense moving, putting up points on the board and not miss a beat."

"King's a football player just like I am," said Herremans, who has excelled as a right tackle this season. "He'll do fine. He'll be able to switch back and forth. He's going to be able to put his long arms to use especially because Calais Campbell's pretty tall as well."

Campbell, the Cardinals' 3-4 defensive end who usually lines up on the right side, is 6-8. So the likely matchup of Dunlap and Campbell could help ease Dunlap's transition. As for any worry about Michael Vick's ability to throw over or around Dunlap, Herremans, 6-6 himself (Mathis is 6-5), doesn't expect the quarterback to have an issue.

"I think Mike uses his passing lanes pretty well anyway," he said. "And with our protection schemes, I don't think he has to throw over the top too often."
