Dallas Goedert just tries to keep it simple. Mention that the tight end position in the NFL has evolved over time and he points to the idea "of doing anything they ask me to do." Ask him about "being in a new offense" and he says that that's kind of the nature of the NFL.

"Every year, things change and you have to change with the flow of the offense," he said. "I never get too worked up about it. I just do my job and try to execute what they want me to do on every play."

Well, what the Eagles want Goedert to do is win in everything he does. In fact, the Eagles look at the tight end position – the entire room encompassing Goedert, Johnny Mundt, E.J. Jenkins on the active roster, Grant Calcaterra on Injured Reserve, and Josiah Deguara on the practice squad – as a huge stew of evolution.

"Being the tight end is a blue-collar job," Mundt said after a recent practice. "So getting it done in the trenches next to the big guys is something I take pride in. "

That's what Mundt does, mostly. But he also runs pass routes – something, interestingly, that he was expected to do much more of when he signed with the Rams after his collegiate career at the University of Oregon – and play special teams and, as Goedert says, "do anything they ask me to do."

Tight end, in the way back days, used to be viewed more as a sixth offensive lineman. But then Mike Ditka – the former Chicago Bears head coach was a great tight end (he was with the Eagles from 1967-68) – caught 56 passes in 1961 and the evolution of the position began. There were players like John Mackey and Jackie Smith and Dave Casper and Tony Gonzalez and all of a sudden, here we are in 2026 and the position is as varied as any in the league.

"You have to be able to do a lot of things and that requires strength, the ability to run routes, a little bit of speed, and all of that," said Goedert, who last season scored 11 touchdowns, an Eagles record for the tight end position. He scored two on Sunday in the 24-22 win over Washington. "Technique is important. Blocking is want-to, also. It's rough in there.

"I think what I like the most is that you are so involved in every play and that every play is so different. The routes are different. You can block for the run or the pass – inside, outside, whatever. It's a lot of fun."

Goedert has always been a team-first player and he has never complained if he isn't heavily involved in the passing game as far as being a featured receiver. On Sunday, he was featured and he and Jalen Hurts cooked up some magic.

Five times the quarterback threw to the tight end and the combination provided four receptions for 77 yards with two touchdowns. One was a red zone bullet to Goedert, who made the catch and got his feet down in the back of the end zone between two defenders to put the Eagles on the scoreboard.

The second was a pass over the middle in traffic. After Goedert made the catch, he spun around and outran the defense to complete the 43-yard catch-and-run touchdown that had his fellow tight ends somewhat at a loss for words.

"It was so funny," Mundt said after the game. "We were looking at the (tablet) after (on the bench), when it was right there before he caught the ball. And there were like three defenders. And Grant was like, 'Score, or no score?' And 99 percent of people would say, 'No score' just based on angles and stuff. And the move he made, that was killer. That was awesome."

That ... that ... that was just part of what Goedert and this tight end group can do. They truly do it all in the name of the Eagles, in the name of the offense, at a position that continues its evolution to become one of the NFL's most versatile and interesting positions.

"We're football players," Goedert said. "We do it all and what they ask, the more they ask, it's a compliment to our ability to get it done."
