Spadaro: 6 observations from a hard-fought loss to the Jaguars in London

There are several valuable lessons that will benefit the Eagles later in the season.

LONDON – So, so close.

For a second consecutive week, the Eagles played with grit and spirit and toughness against a high-quality team and came ... up ... just short.

This time, in front of a huge Eagles crowd at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London, Philadelphia saw a seven-point halftime advantage slip away in the fourth quarter, took a lead on a clutch Jake Elliott field goal with eight seconds remaining, and then, well, suffered a crushing defeat. Cam Little's 57-yard field goal as time expired gave Jacksonville a 19-17 victory as the Eagles return home for Sunday's game against Carolina at Lincoln Financial Field.

Philadelphia gave it everything it had, entering the game with a depleted roster and losing more key players as the game went along. Some observations as the Eagles fell to 2-3 for the season ...

1. A wild start that impacts the game at the end

The Eagles kicked off to open the game and Jacksonville's Josh Cameron returned the kick 90 yards for an apparent touchdown, and that was only part of the crazy first play of the game. The return was called back because of multiple penalties on both teams, and in the process, Jacksonville's Bryan Thomas Jr. and Philadelphia's Jeremiah Trotter Jr. were ejected from the game. Trotter is the Eagles' most dominant player on kick coverage, and combined with the loss of running back Will Shipley (foot) during the game, the coverage units were challenged. And it hurt the Eagles at the very end after Jake Elliott booted a 48-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining to put the Eagles ahead, 17-16. He kicked off to Jacksonville and Ameer Abdullah returned it 57 yards and was tackled at the Philadelphia 39-yard line by Jonathan Jones. One second remained on the game clock and Jacksonville placekicker Cam Little booted a 57-yard field goal as time expired to win it for the Jaguars.

2. The injuries continue to mount for the Eagles

The list continued to grow, further taxing the Eagles' roster. Outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard tested his ankle prior to the game and was unable to play, leaving the Eagles short in their defensive front seven. Already on the inactive list because of injuries were running back Saquon Barkley, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, center Drew Kendall, safety Marcus Epps, and wide receiver Hollywood Brown. Outside linebacker Jalyx Hunt suffered an ankle/knee injury on the final play of the first half and missed the remainder of the game, Shipley went out and didn't return, safety Michael Carter II left with an abdominal injury, and right guard Tyler Steen missed most of the third quarter with a shoulder injury, but he did return for the fourth quarter.

3. Eagles fans, you are the best!

This was a road game for the Eagles, but you wouldn't know it from the overwhelming number of Eagles fans in attendance. They were so loud and into the game that Jacksonville was penalized three times for false starts and another three times for delay of game as Eagles fans completely befuddled Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Thanks, fans. You were amazing, as always.

4. Defense comes out roaring and stays that way

Defensive tackle Jalen Carter – who played without a cast on his injured wrist – was incredible in the first half with four tackles, two quarterback sacks, three tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles as the Eagles' defense played lights out. There was an amazing four-play goal-line stand during which the Eagles stymied Jacksonville on four plays from the Philadelphia 1-yard line and six plays overall inside the 10-yard line. The Eagles gave up a 51-yard catch-and-run touchdown from wide receiver Parker Washington in that first half, but otherwise, they were stout. Jacksonville managed only 33 rushing yards and 129 passing yards in those two quarters – dominating the line of scrimmage, tackling well, playing with discipline. A great half and, really, a great game of defense from the Eagles considering everything. Philadelphia had a second goal-line stand in the fourth quarter, which was just so impressive. Washington added a one-handed touchdown grab of a Lawrence pass on fourth-and-5 from the Philadelphia 27-yard line, giving Jacksonville a lead late in the fourth quarter that Elliott erased with his big kick with eight seconds on the clock.

5. Darius Cooper again comes up big

Facing one-on-one coverage, wide receiver Darius Cooper made the Jaguars pay. He stutter-stepped with a clean release off the line of scrimmage, working against cornerback Montaric Brown, gained some separation, and caught a Jalen Hurts pass. Cooper then made a move inside and outran the Jacksonville secondary for a 62-yard catch-and-run touchdown to help the Eagles take a 14-7 lead. It was Cooper's fourth touchdown of the season.

The offense had trouble running the football, but hung in there and put the go-ahead points on the board with a 9-play, 37-yard drive that led to Elliott's field goal. Dameon Pierce stepped in for Shipley and gained 14 yards on 11 carries. Dallas Goedert returned to the lineup and caught 6 passes for 38 yards, Dontayvion Wicks had five catches for 63 yards, Makai Lemon caught 5 passes for 43 yards, and Cooper had two receptions for 71 yards and the touchdown.

6. Offensive line, on the fly, hangs in there

Jacksonville brought pressure, a lot of it. It gave the Eagles trouble, without a doubt, but the offensive line, pieces put in place during the week, played hard and kept its composure. Jordan Mailata started at left tackle, Willie Lampkin played left guard, Jake Majors took over at center, Steen played until he was injured (replaced by Fred Johnson briefly in the third quarter), and Markel Bell made his second NFL start at right tackle. All in all, something to build on. The entire game was something to build upon – starting with the effort, the togetherness, and the toughness this team showed in the face of extreme adversity. It will pay off for the Eagles during the course of the rest of the season.

It's the Philadelphia Eagles at the Jacksonville Jaguars in London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a little Sunday morning football! Can the Eagles bounce back against one of the AFC's best teams?
