How to describe something so remarkable as what happened on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field when the Philadelphia Eagles turned a 19-point second-half deficit into a heart-pumping second blocked field goal of the game and a 61-yard touchdown return by Jordan Davis to defeat the Los Angeles Rams, 33-26.
This one was beyond incredible.
The Eagles had 33 total net yards of offense in the first half and trailed 19-7 after two quarters. Then they committed their first giveaway of the season on the opening possession of the second half when quarterback Jalen Hurts was drilled by Jared Verse and fumbled the ball, which Los Angeles recovered at the Eagles' 10-yard line. One play later, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford threw a swing pass to running back Kyren Williams, and he raced into the end zone and the Rams led 26-7 and it didn't look good at all for the Eagles.
Then, it all changed as the Eagles scored 26 unanswered points and, well, it was crazy. Here are some observations as the Eagles upped their record to 3-0 ...
1. The passing game went wild in the second half
Jalen Hurts at halftime: 4-of-8 passing for 17 yards. Jalen Hurts after four quarters: 21-of-32 for 226 yards and three touchdowns, with a passer rating of 117.4. He averaged 7.1 yards per attempt.
How? Why?
The passing game had not been at its best in the opening two games, plus the first half on Sunday, and then it was outstanding in quarters three and four.
The Eagles had no choice, in comeback mode, but to throw the football and open things up a bit and that's what they did. Hurts connected with wide receiver A.J. Brown six times for 109 yards and a touchdown on nine targets (one target in the first half) in the second half. DeVonta Smith had six receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown that gave the Eagles the winning points with just 1:48 remaining in the game. Tight end Dallas Goedert had just one catch, but it was a biggie, a 33-yard catch and run from Hurts to cap a 5-play, 79-yard drive that immediately followed the Rams' touchdown that put them ahead, 26-7.
Another thing to note, the Eagles went up-tempo in the second half, utilizing no huddle on over half of their plays (53.7 percent), according to NFL's Next Gen Stats. In the first half, they had just one play using no huddle.
2. Fred Johnson steps up and balls out
The Eagles traded for Fred Johnson just before the start of the regular season to add depth. On Sunday, the Eagles had some challenges up front. Right tackle Lane Johnson left the game with a neck injury following the offense's first drive and was replaced by Matt Pryor. Los Angeles immediately attacked Pryor with a variety of blitzes and pressures and the offense faltered in part because of that.
Fred Johnson entered the game after that strip sack of Hurts in the third quarter and the offense took off. He played, as he did in past seasons when he replaced injured starters along the offensive line – Johnson started six games last season, five at left tackle and one at right tackle, and played 481 offensive snaps before signing with Jacksonville in free agency.
Howie Roseman wisely sent a 2026 seventh-round draft pick to the Jags to bring Johnson back to Philadelphia in late August. And he just made that trade more than worthwhile.
"I always believe in myself and the players around me," Johnson said. "I'm conditioned, so that wasn't a problem. I just looked and couldn't believe we drove 17 plays and 94 yards on that last drive (that ended with a Hurts-to-Smith touchdown pass). That's crazy. It's a good feeling. I was out there thinking I just don't want to let my teammates and my coaches down."
3. Eagles open game with great complementary football
This is how you open a football game: Jake Elliott's kickoff landed at the 1-yard line and the kickoff coverage team did its job, with Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Kylen Granson making the tackle on Blake Corum at the 23-yard line. Good stuff there.
Four plays later, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford dropped back to pass, looked left for wide receiver Davante Adams running an in-breaking route. Adams was bracketed in coverage, with edge Jalyx Hunt dropped in coverage on Adams' shoulder and linebacker Zack Baun inside in coverage. Baun made a terrific interception, setting up the offense at the Los Angeles 38-yard line. A nine-play, 38-yard drive put the ball in the end zone and it included two fourth-down conversions, one on Hurts gaining 18 yards on a designed keeper and one on a Tush Push (presented by DUDE Wipes), which converted a fourth-and-1 from the Los Angeles 3-yard line. A throw to Brown drew a pass-interference penalty in the end zone, and on first-and-goal from the 1-yard line, Hurts converted a Tush Push for the touchdown. Elliott's extra point made it 7-0, a great way to start the game.

4. The special teams had a wild and crazy and ultimately awesome day
The kickoff return team couldn't get a clean handle on any of the five opportunities it had, the punt coverage team gave up more yards than Special Teams Coordinator Michael Clay wanted, and ... yet ...
With two blocked field goals, one by Jalen Carter – on a 36-yard attempt by Joshua Karty – and the last one by Jordan Davis on a 44-yard attempt, the special teams were huge in this one. Both of the blocks came on pressure in the A gap and they were executed in perfect form. Carter and Davis gained penetration, put their hands up, and spiked the kicks. Davis picked up the football after his block and returned it 61 yards for the exclamation point on an amazing afternoon as the fans at Lincoln Financial Field went bonkers.
5. Some flowers for individual performances ...
- Baun was all over the field with 7 total tackles, the interception, and two passes defended. His versatility is being maximized in this defense and he and Jihaad Campbell (8 total tackles) are winning the middle of the field.
- Davis continues to play outstanding football. In addition to his blocked field goal and touchdown return, he had five total tackles, a hustle sack when he chased Stafford out of bounds, one quarterback hurry, and a tackle for loss to force a turnover on downs.
- Solid job again by a defense that shut out the Rams after Los Angeles had that 26-7 lead. Stafford threw for 196 yards. The Eagles battled against a great receiving corps, executed better, made some tweaks in the course of the game. Outstanding.
- Wonderful to see A.J. Brown dominating the game, as he did in the second half. And Smith was clutch, as always, with his touchdown catch to produce the winning points on a fourth-and-goal play.
- Hurts just doesn't stop, does he? The offense couldn't get anything going in the first half but he stuck with it, and he opened things up and maybe that's the hump the Eagles needed to get over. He took some hits but got right back up and gained 40 rushing yards to go along with his 226 passing yards.
- Offensive Coordinator Kevin Patullo, way to adjust and get things roaring in the second half.
- How many times have I written a postgame story without mentioning Saquon Barkley? Bottled up all game by a Rams defense focused on stopping him, Barkley gained 46 yards on 18 carries and added 9 yards on four receptions. He stepped in and was physical in pass protection against a blitzing Rams defense that won those battles.
- At 3-0, the Eagles head to Tampa to play the Bucs, who are also 3-0, on Sunday. Another battle of unbeatens. Feels so good …
