Taking A Look At Eagles' Contract Picture

580x400-EaglesInsider.jpg

Extending the contract of Jason Peters through 2019 accomplishes many things for the Eagles – notably satisfying Peters’ desire to finish his career here, keeping a core player under contract for three seasons, and, while the details of Peters' contract aren't public, likely helping the Eagles' salary cap picture for this season as, historically, these kinds of deal do.

Here is a look at the contract status of the roster, position by position:

Quarterback

Carson Wentz is signed on his rookie contract through 2019 and backup Nick Foles signed a two-year deal in March, so he's here through 2018.

Running Back

LeGarrette Blount signed a one-year contract in March and Darren Sproles' contract expires after the 2017 season. Wendell Smallwood is in the second year of his four-year rookie contract.

Wide Receiver

Alshon Jeffery signed a one-year contract in March and Torrey Smith inked a three-year deal as an unrestricted free agent, a contract that reportedly includes club options for 2018 and 2019. Jordan Matthews' rookie contract is set to expire after this season. Nelson Agholor is signed through 2018.

Tight End

Zach Ertz has a contract that runs through 2021 and Brent Celek's deal extends through the 2018 season. Trey Burton is due to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2017 campaign.

Offensive Line

The Eagles are in great shape here. Peters is now signed through 2019. Lane Johnson's long-term contract runs through 2021, Jason Kelce and Brandon Brooks are signed through 2020, and Stefen Wisniewski and second-year men Isaac Seumalo and Halapoulivaati Vaitai have contracts through 2019.

Allen Barbre and Chance Warmack are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents after the 2017 season.

!

, of course, is a rookie. Chris Long is signed for two seasons. Vinny Curry is signed through 2020. Fletcher Cox has a deal through 2021. Brandon Graham is signed through 2018.

Both Tim Jernigan and Beau Allen have deals that are set to expire following the 2017 season.

Linebacker

Jordan Hicks' rookie contract runs through the 2018 season and Mychal Kendricks is signed through 2019. Nigel Bradham, added as an unrestricted free agent prior to the 2016 season, is set to be an unrestricted free agent after this year, as is valuable reserve Najee Goode.

Defensive Back

Starting safeties Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod have deals through 2020. Chris Maragos, a cornerstone on special teams and a key reserve in the secondary, is signed through 2019. The cornerbacks, a very young group, are a work in progress in many areas, including their contract status. Ron Brooks has a contract through 2017 with a reported club option in 2018. Patrick Robinson is here on a one-year contract as an unrestricted free agent. The rest of the group is young with roster spots still uncertain.

Specialists

Punter Donnie Jones is signed through 2019 and long snapper Jon Dorenbos has a deal through 2018 with a reported club option in 2019. Placekicker Caleb Sturgis is signed through 2017.

Players To Watch

In the big picture, the Eagles are continually working on the salary cap and the roster's contracts. Some projected key players, including wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, defensive tackles Tim Jernigan and Beau Allen, running back LeGarrette Blount, wide receiver Jordan Matthews, tight end Trey Burton, placekicker Caleb Sturgis, offensive linemen Allen Barbre and Chance Warmack and linebacker Nigel Bradham have contracts that expire after the 2017 season.

The work, truly, is never done.
