Spadaro: Offense knows Rams defense presents a 'ton of talent'

The offense has flashed in each of the first three games, but now the unit strives for consistency.

There are times when the offense has hummed through three games – explosive plays against Washington, four long drives (three for scores) in Tennessee, a productive running game and a last-minute touchdown drive in the first half at Chicago – that provide a roadmap for Offensive Coordinator Sean Mannion and the Eagles to build on.

The goal is, of course, consistency. Doing it for 60 minutes. Putting it all together and keeping it there.

"We've had some peaks and we've had some valleys," wide receiver Darius Cooper said, "and that's part of the building process for us. We want to keep building, keep growing. We know we aren't where we know we can be. It's about us. It's about rising to the challenge and playing the kind of ball we know we can play, growing and improving and playing our best football as the season goes along."

The next challenge is the Rams, a talented defense that has a terrific line, attacking linebackers, and ballhawks in the secondary. Los Angeles pitched a shutout at Denver in the first half of its loss on Sunday night before some glitches cost them the game in the second half.

Mannion respects what he sees from the Rams, a team he played for from 2015-18 after they made him a third-round draft pick from Oregon State.

"They're certainly a tough opponent. They've got a lot of talented players," Mannion said on Thursday. "They play hard. They play physical. I think they do some challenging things schematically, but, yeah, they have a ton of talent over there.

"I know they're really well-coached from (Head Coach) Sean (McVay) and (Defensive Coordinator) Chris Shula, two tremendous coaches, and it'll be a great test for us this week. We've had a good two days' worth of practice. We need to finish this week strong to be ready for them because they're a team that is physical, they play hard, and they're well-coached. It's going to be a good test for us."

Injuries are part of the test, with tight end Dallas Goedert out this week as he rehabs his knee injury and with wide receiver DeVonta Smith out with a hamstring injury. Along with that, the new-look offensive line – minus left guard Landon Dickerson, who is on Injured Reserve – is making its third start together.

Mannion is confident he has the people to get the offense into the end zone with more consistency.

"Everyone in our room is ready to win their matchups and ready to do what we're asking them to do," he said when asked specifically about wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks. "I think that's been the luxury of our depth, is that we have a lot of different guys who we feel like can win their matchup. If guys go down due to injury and things like that, it does leave you, I think, well-suited to, it sounds cliche, but next man up, and that might change someone's role from one week to the next, but we feel like everyone's capable of shouldering that burden.

"Wicks has been doing a ton of great stuff. Makai's (Lemon) been doing a ton of great stuff. You look across the board at multiple different position groups. We feel confident in our depth across the board, and they're going to step up to really help us continue to grow and improve as an offense."

The goal is to move forward each and every day, each and every game. Sunday, it's a Rams defense that's the target, one the Eagles hope to be attacking with success for 60 minutes.
