Spadaro: A six-pack of observations one week into Eagles Training Camp

We're now at the full-pads stage of Training Camp at the one-week mark of the 2025 summer action and Tuesday greeted the Eagles with a scorching morning of high heat and humidity. The practice, moved up an hour because of the intense, high-90s temperatures, went for nearly two hours and was chock full of great work.

What do we know about the Eagles one week into Training Camp? It is early to make any sweeping reads, but the tempo has been great, there is a lot of talent and roster competition, and the team is connected in every way.

The football has been crisp. Cutting down to 53 players is going to be a challenge. Some things to talk about here ...

  • Blocking drills: Close up against Jihaad Campbell

The running backs worked against the linebackers in one-on-one pass-blocking drills – always a great drill to watch – and second-year running back Will Shipley had a scouting report on what rookie linebacker Jihaad Campbell showed him.

In short: A lot.

"It's almost like he's a defensive end rushing the ball. He's a stud. There is no hesitation. He knows what he is doing before he goes, but it's also very instinctual," Shipley said. "He is a stud. You kind of know it off the ball. There are a lot of guys who continue to grow as I'm sure he will, but he's there right now in terms of physically, mentally, and everything he needs to be successful. He's there. I'm in pass pro throwing my hands and he's moving me back like a pass rusher. This dude's got it."

  • Jeff Stoutland is working to make the best better

Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach Jeff Stoutland spent time with reporters after practice and talked about making the best offensive line better.

"There is always a way to make yourself better. There is always room for improvement. And the best part is that I coach players that know that," Stoutland said. "There are details to everything. We missed on some things last year."

The lone starting position up for grabs up front is at right guard, where third-year man Tyler Steen has worked with the first team throughout camp. Stoutland is impressed with Steen.

"He played a lot of football last year, you gotta realize that (316 snaps in regular season, 84 in playoffs)," Stoutland said. "I think that helps a player develop confidence and he's acting that way right now. Today was a big day for Tyler Steen in my opinion. He did some things that I've been talking to him about and he executed them and he did a good job."

After practice, Stoutland was presented with the Pro Football Writers Association Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman Award, an annual lifetime achievement honor presented to an NFL coach and named after legendary Sports Illustrated writer Paul Zimmerman, one of the early, early X's and O's gurus who specialized in the line of scrimmage and the battles there. It is a great acknowledgment and deserved recognition for Stoutland, the best offensive line coach in the NFL.

  • Preseason and what it means

Defensive tackle Thomas Booker recognizes the value of the preseason and understands that, in fact, he earned a roster spot last year in large part because he made plays in the preseason. It means everything to the guys who are on the field.

"It is intense," he said. "We're out there battling for jobs. Every snap means something. The entire league is watching you and you are out there putting everything on the line. We go through these practices and I have always felt that how you practice is a reflection of how you play. You take this to the preseason games and put the best version of yourself out there. Jobs are on the line, no doubt."

The Eagles open the preseason next Thursday, August 7 at Lincoln Financial Field with a 7:30 PM kickoff against Cincinnati.

The Eagles had their first practice in full pads on Tuesday.

  • A view of Q from the other side

Second-year cornerback Quinyon Mitchell has been outstanding this summer, as anyone who has watched practice can attest, but it's always good to get a view from the quarterback trying to complete passes on No. 27. Jalen Hurts is very, very impressed with what he has seen from Mitchell.

"He's come in and he's having a really good start to his camp, playing with great confidence, and that is something you can see. I'm always, I'm his biggest fan," Hurts said, "because on the other side of the ball when you see guys just taking those strides and growing and competing and knowing that they're going against the best of the best every day, I know he's continuing to take those steps every day."

  • What will the wide receiver depth chart look like?

Who rounds out the wide receiver depth chart? This is far from decided after A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Jahan Dotson. Second-year men Ainias Smith and Johnny Wilson return and some newcomers will battle, but this position has a long way to go before it settled.

  • Cornerback play: Iron sharpens iron

We know that Mitchell is slated to be a starting cornerback on the outside and that Cooper DeJean is one of the game's best nickel corners, but how about the rest of the group? Good competition, to say the least.

Adoree' Jackson has been on top of his game one week into Training Camp, Kelee Ringo is vying for a starting job, rookie Mac McWilliams has taken reps at nickel and on the outside, and Eli Ricks has been consistent and had his hands on the ball during Tuesday's practice.

Again, the key here is depth and consistency and building confidence. The benefit is working against a strong group of receivers that offer varying looks. And the Eagles have some young veterans in the mix – like Ricks – who know what to expect and what they need to do to win jobs. Nothing firm here as far as a rotation, but good play so far from the entire cornerback group has been encouraging to see.
