The Eagles put on a show to open the 2025 preseason, beating the Cincinnati Bengals 34-27 on a night when just about everything went right for the offense, even when it played against the Bengals' first-team defensive unit.
There were a ton of highlights, so let's get right to it. The Eagles rolled up 432 total net yards of offense, committed exactly zero pre-snap penalties, had excellent ball security, and moved the ball up and down the field. There were some mistakes made on defense when the Bengals had quarterback Joe Burrow and the rest of the first-team offense out there, and those moments will be used as teaching moments.
Otherwise, an awesome night ...
1. Quarterback Tanner McKee had himself a fantastic game, playing into the third quarter. He completed 20 of 25 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns and also scored on a Tush Push on a fourth-and-goal play from the 1-yard line in the first quarter. McKee threw darts all night, worked the pocket beautifully, had great anticipation and accuracy, and probably only made one throw he would like to have back. He is the No. 2 quarterback now, one play away from game action, and the Eagles have the highest confidence in him for good reason. McKee played good football at the end of last season, stepping in against Dallas when Kenny Pickett was injured and then leading the Eagles to a win over the Giants' starting team in Week 18. He will play more in this preseason and McKee will just get better and better.
2. Great night for the Eagles' receiving corps. Second-year men Johnny Wilson and Ainias Smith, in particular, really stepped it up. Wilson had three high-point catches for 73 yards and looked outstanding working with McKee. Smith caught a touchdown pass and also added a big-play 46-yard punt return. Darius Cooper caught six passes for 82 yards and a touchdown. Jahan Dotson was uncoverable early in the game working against the Bengals' starters. Great game by the receiving corps and important as the Eagles hoped some players would step up and, in this preseason game, they did just that.
3. Tyler Steen started at right guard and played very well in pass protection. He also sealed linebacker Logan Wilson on a 38-yard run by Will Shipley to the right side. Good performance from Steen.
4. Rookie Ty Robinson had a quarterback sack early and made more penetration later in the game and was very active inside. Good stuff.
5. Loved the way running back A.J. Dillon ran downfield, gaining 27 yards on five carries. He also caught three passes for 27 yards. This is going to be a dynamic three-man group of running backs with Shipley and Dillon complementing Saquon Barkley.
6. Crazy sequence for outside linebacker Patrick Johnson, who had a quarterback sack nullified by a downfield penalty in the secondary, and then he came back on the next play and stuck out his right hand to tip the ball and intercept a Jake Browning screen pass and return it to the Cincinnati 19-yard line.
7. A moment that may not mean much now but ... holding a 34-27 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the game, Braden Mann crushed a 65-yard punt to back up the Bengals to their 20-yard line. In a pressure moment, Mann delivered.
8. The Eagles' defense had at least three chances for more interceptions and that is something the coaches will emphasize all week.
9. All Jeremiah Trotter Jr. does is work himself into the right position. He had six total tackles and is just such a cerebral player and excellent technician.
10. Cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields had three pass breakups in the fourth quarter, a nice performance from him.
11. Safety Sydney Brown went out of the game and into the blue tent, but later came out and was on the sideline. Wide receiver Elijah Cooks was carted off the field and we will get an update on his status when the team gets back to practice this weekend.
12. Big week ahead: Team practices on Saturday and then the Eagles move to Lincoln Financial Field for a sold-out Public Practice on Sunday night. Cleveland is in town for joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of Saturday's preseason game No. 2 at Lincoln Financial Field (1 PM kickoff).
Step onto the field for the Eagles' preseason opener against the Bengals.
