The Eagles hit the field at the Jefferson Health Training Complex on Saturday for a scrimmage between the offense and defense. So, who stood out?

Injury report for practice on August 8th

Did not practice with injury: WR Britain Covey, WR Danny Grey, OLB Keyshawn James-Newby, WR Makai Lemon, WR DeVonta Smith, S Cole Wisniewski, and OLB Jonathan Greenard.

Limited: LB Chance Campbell.

Offense ends on a high note

The last team period of the day was defined by a game situation: down eight points with 46 seconds left.

From the 25-yard line, Jalen Hurts rolled right after pressure from Moro Ojomo forced him out of the pocket. Dallas Goedert was running a regular out route but ran down the field as he saw Hurts out of the Pocket. Hurts threw it deep to the near corner of the endzone where Goedrt boxed out his defender, jumped up in the air to bring in the ball, and got both feet in bounds before being forced out. Touchdown.

Then came the 2-point attempt. Elijah Moore ran an in route, going from the right side of the lineup to the left side of the field. The offensive line allowed the play to develop, and Hurts found Moore wide open for the conversion.

Running backs found their groove

Saquon Barkley scored one play after Jalyx Hunt and Jihaad Campbell were able to contain him to just a three-yard gain. Goedert motioned to the right side of the offensive line before the snap. Hurts handed the ball to Barkley on an inside zone and the star running back was able to follow blocks by Tyler Steen and rookie Markel Bell to the endzone from seven yards out.

Brought in on a futures/reserve contract in January, Carson Steele had a productive day as well. Not only did the third year running back have a handful of positive rushes, he picked up blitzes and brought in the catch of the day. With the ball on the defense's six-yard line, defensive tackle Zion Wilson was able to pressure fellow rookie Cole Payton as he threw to Steele on a flat route to the left.

The pressure caused the throw to be behind Steele. With the tracking linebacker bearing down on the ball, Steele reached back with his left hand to miraculously bring it in and run the extra five yards for a touchdown.

The Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt show

Smith was one of the best performing players of the scrimmage. Jalyx Hunt and Nolan Smith have swapped sides of the defensive line consistently in Training Camp, with Smith primarily lined up against the left tackle this week and Hunt on the right tackle. Both were able to get themselves in the backfield consistently through practice, forcing throw aways by Hurts.

Defense forces interceptions

The defense was able to come away with two interceptions during the scrimmage. The first occurred during third-team offense versus third-team defense. On 2nd and 4, Payton faked the hand-off and rolled to his left. Trying to find Michael Hayes 10-yards down the field, rookie safety Maximus Pulley read the play and was able to intercept the pass.

The second interception came on the second play of the last team period. After nearly a 20-yard gain on a pass from Hurts to Hollywood Brown between the sticks, Hurts targeted the middle of the field again on a 10-yard dig from Dontayvion Wicks. However, Zack Baun read the quarterback and jumped the pass from his zone.

Other highlights and observations

  • The first touchdown of the day came by way of Jalen Hurts and Hollywood Brown. After a scramble by Hurts to get the offense in the redzone, QB1 evaded pressure from a blitzing Jihaad Cambell, finding Brown wide open on a crossing route. Brown then ran 10+ yards to the end zone for a touchdown.
  • Cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields continued his run of good practices, being physical in the pass game and breaking up a well-thrown ball on an out route during a team period.
  • Elijah Moore added to his impressive plays made at Training Camp. At the 37-yard line, the offensive line held strong, allowing Hurts to fire towards Moore 17-yards down the field, crossing left. Once it arrived, it looked like Zack Baun, who was covering Moore, was going to have a pick as he leapt forward. Despite the contested ball and contact, Moore was able to wrestle the ball out for a big gain.
  • Hurts excelled over the middle, once finding Dontayvion Wicks on a 15-yard drag route that advanced the offense from the 50 to the 30-yard line.
  • Andy Dalton also made most of his chunk plays throwing over the middle of the field, finding tight end E.J. Jenkins on a slant for a good gain versus the second-team defense.
  • Will Shipley continued to be a factor in both the passing and rushing game, being targeted multiple times for short and intermediate gains.
  • A.J. Epenesa had good reps on special teams, shaking his blocker on a punt return to get to the returner quickly.
  • Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis continued to make plays in the run game and collapse the pocket. Jihaad Campbell also had a good day, meeting Saquon Barkley near the line of scrimmage on multiple plays.
