Eagles Early Offseason Position Preview: Quarterback

Jalen Hurts
Jalen Hurts

Some of the numbers say that Jalen Hurts had a 2023 season out of reach for virtually every other quarterback: franchise records with 38 total touchdowns, with 23 coming in the passing game and 15 on the ground, and 4,463 total yards. He earned a second-consecutive trip to the Pro Bowl and continued to be a threat with his arm and on the ground.

As with every great player, Hurts understands how the game works and how defenses look to take away his strengths after two strong seasons. It will be interesting to see how Hurts and a new-look offense under Kellen Moore, will be able to counter what defenses try to do against them. Moore is his fourth offensive coordinator in five seasons in Philadelphia and he has a strong pedigree when it comes to working with talented quarterbacks after having also played the position himself.

Tanner McKee returns for his second season after impressing the coaching staff as a sixth-round draft pick. He backed up Hurts and Marcus Mariota during the regular season after seeing extensive action in the preseason and McKee completed 39 of 72 passes for 453 yards and a touchdown in three games and in the typical chaotic preseason situations. He had some mobility, a strong arm and poise, and the Eagles are excited to build upon that baseline of work in the season ahead.

Key QB Fact: In 2023, Hurts tied Buffalo's Josh Allen with an NFL-record 15 rushing touchdowns and his 38 touchdowns on the ground the last two seasons are a league high.
