Matt Leo enters his second season as a player development assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles. He joined the club's front office as a defensive and football operations assistant during training camp in 2023 after retiring from his playing career as a defensive end.
Leo originally entered the league through the NFL International Player Pathway Program during the 2020 offseason. He spent parts of four seasons with the Eagles, including three on the practice squad, and contributed to a defense that helped the team advance to Super Bowl LVII in 2022.
Prior to his arrival in Philadelphia, Leo played collegiately at Iowa State (2017-19), where he finished his career with 33 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. He began playing football at Arizona Western Community College (2015-16), earning a spot on the roster as a walk-on.
Leo played club rugby and Australian rules football while attending high school at St. Michael's College (Adelaide, Australia). Upon graduating, his father encouraged him to learn a trade, so he completed an apprenticeship to become a qualified construction plumber. A conversation with his tradesman led to his football dreams coming to life as he trained for potential opportunities with Paul Manera, one of the top football coaches in Australia.
A native of Adelaide, Australia, Leo received a liberal studies degree in the spring of 2019 from Iowa State.
