Rumor Mill is an aggregation of Eagles-related reports, rumors and wild speculation. The team does not endorse these items.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport broke the story that Saints head coach Sean Payton will remain in the same post with the New Orleans Saints in 2016. There were multiple reports in the past week that the two sides could part ways with the Saints trying to recoup compensation in a trade.

According to Paul Domowitch of the Philadelphia Daily News, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton could be one of the Eagles' top coaching candidates.

Payton is under contract with the Saints, though Domowitch says he is meeting with ownership to discuss his future. Other reports have said the Saints may be willing to trade Payton in exchange for draft picks.

Payton would make sense for the Eagles on a number of levels. He led New Orleans to a Super Bowl title at the end of the 2009 season, defeating Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl to take home the title. Since joining the Saints as the teams head coach in 2006, the Saints' offense has ranked in the top five in the NFL in terms of yards per game in every season except one, and the Saints have led the NFL in yards per game five times with Payton at the helm. Under Payton's watch, Drew Brees resurrected his career with the Saints and has built a Hall Of Fame résumé, while now-Seattle tight end Jimmy Graham had some of the most prolific seasons ever by a tight end during his time in New Orleans.

Payton also has ties to the Eagles' franchise. He served as the team's quarterbacks coach in 1997 and 1998 before moving on to the Giants as their quarterbacks coach in 1999. He later served as the Giants' offensive coordinator before becoming an assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach for the Dallas Cowboys.
