The Eagles added quality depth and competition to the wide receiver room on Monday, officially acquiring John Metchie III and a 2026 sixth-round pick from the Houston Texans, sending to Houston tight end Harrison Bryant and a fifth-round draft pick in 2026. The draft picks involved were each team's original picks in the 2026 NFL Draft that were previously exchanged in the Chauncey Gardner-Johnson trade earlier this offseason.
Metchie, a second-round draft pick in 2022 by the Texans (44th overall), missed his entire rookie season after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). He has 40 receptions for 412 yards and one touchdown in 29 games.
In the 2024 season, Metchie had 24 receptions for 254 yards and a touchdown in 13 games.
Metchie will wear No. 80 when he takes the practice field for the first time as an Eagle on Tuesday.
"Not only is he a great football player, but he's a great person, and I wouldn't want anybody else other than those guys in that room," Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud told reporters in the 2024 offseason. "His mindset is that he's just ready to come back and ball. Metchie is looking amazing. Everything that he will put on this field will be no surprise, but I think everybody in this room knows how special he can be, and he'll put that on the field."
The 25-year-old Metchie is a 6-foot, 195-pounder who enjoyed an outstanding career at Alabama, alongside Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith, with 155 receptions for 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns. Metchie and Smith won the National Championship at Alabama in the 2020 season. Metchie was a second-team All-SEC selection in his third and final season at Alabama in 2021.
Metchie has played well in this preseason. He has six receptions for 53 yards in two games, including a team-high 5 catches for 45 yards on eight targets in Saturday's game against Minnesota. Metchie has the versatility to play both outside and in the slot.
He was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and moved to Ghana, then to Canada at the age of 6, before settling in Maryland and then New Jersey in high school.
With Metchie in the fold, the Eagles have 13 wide receivers on the roster and six tight ends.
