Philadelphia Eagles News

Defensive Coordinator Juan Castillo

On Bears RB Matt Forte's performance on Monday night and whether he thinks the Eagles stopped the run: "Well, the bottom line is that we didn't win. Even if we held him to 20 yards, you know, we have to win the game. That's the bottom line, that's the goal, that's what we have to achieve."

On whether there were any communication errors and what he attributes them to: "Well, every team has certain formations, shifts, motions, and all those things, and that's what you do during the week. That's what you prepare for during the week, so you don't have any communication problems, or any errors, or anything like that. I have to do a better job with that during the week."

On whether the Bears showed different things that he wasn't expecting: "The thing is, that's what you have to prepare for when you play a team that had some time to prepare for you. That's why you have to be sharp. We've come off bye weeks, and we have that extra week, so you know that so you have to do, really, even a better job than a normal week."

On whether there were any communications errors due to having young safeties in the game as well as S Jaiquawn Jarrett getting his first playing time at safety: "No, I've just got to do a better job during the week, that's when it all happens. Our third safety and our fourth safety, they get reps during the week, so we all work. I think the key is just making sure that you prepare for all the formations and everything that you're going to get and work the things that you feel that you're going to get. I think that's the key during the week. I have to do a better job with that."

On whether he's concerned that the defense has been gashed in the first quarter, come back in the second and third, and then relinquished the lead in the fourth: "Yes, we talk about finishing, as a team we talk about finishing, and that's what we work on during the week. We didn't give up a touchdown there at the end, we held them to a field goal, but you know, we had some penalties and they ate up some time. Really, looking back at the game, the third down was really the crucial thing. We've been, really, pretty decent during the year on third downs and we didn't do as good a job with the third downs. I've got to do a better job game planning the third down situations."

On whether he was surprised that the Bears stopped the Eagles front four pass rush as well as they did, and what can be done to counter that: "There's certain things you do, we've had that happen before, we've faced that. There's really two things that anybody does. You either play coverage and then you say, you know what, what's going to happen is you should be in good shape, or you blitz. So if one doesn't work you have to go to the other one, and be prepared to do that."

On whether the coverage was not where it needed to be: "The thing is, I have to do a better job putting our guys in better position to cover. They made some first downs on third downs, and really, we had been pretty good at that. I think we we're seventh or in the top ten in third down percentage, so we had been doing a good job with that. I have to do a better job game planning that."

On whether there was any expectation that CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie may struggle with moving into the slot without the benefit of OTAs: "With Dominique, he's such a talented player, good kid, hard working. The thing is, that nickel position, when you look at it it's a tough position because the receiver has a two-way go. Our goal is that Dominique has that kind of ability to be a special guy in there, and we know that it was going to take a little bit of time because it's something tough for him to do to get in there, but we know he has that kind of ability, we know in time he'll be the best nickel guy there is, just because he has that kind of ability. But yes, does it take a little bit of time? Yes."

On whether Jarrett is ready if he has to start this week: "Well, you know what, he's been working hard and he's a physical guy. That's one thing that you did see this past week, there's a physical presence there. The more reps that he'll get the more comfortable he feels. I think it's more just about feeling comfortable than anything else."

On how Jarrett graded out after Monday night: "You know what, he had a solid game, he was good. Like I said, we all know that he's a physical guy; he's a good tackler, so just the thing is just getting comfortable being in there and playing."

On how DE Brandon Graham played: "You know what, it was nice to see Brandon out there again. He played hard. He was solid. I think for being the first time back out there, you saw that he has a couple good rushes. We're excited. I think every day that he practices he gets better. I saw him, he had a nice move yesterday in practice against one of our offensive linemen, so I think just every day he gets in a little better shape and gets used to being hit, and so we're excited about that."

On how much getting more reps and knowing he's going to play help Jarrett: "Well you know what, that's the key. You only have so many plays during the week, and I think that's the critical part. Jarrett, last week, probably out of eight plays he probably took two or three, you know, where this week he'll be taking all of them, or he has been taking all of them. So it does make a difference."

On the different skill sets between Arizona Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb and QB John Skelton and not knowing which one the Eagles will be facing: "We all know Kevin. We know Kevin more than the other kid, you know, I mean, Kevin's a competitor, he's a winner. We know that part. The other kid, you know, did a good job. He's a taller kid, so he can see a little bit better, and he moves decent. It looks like he has a good feel for their offense. So both of them are pretty good players. I think the difference is one's just a little taller, and maybe Kev moves just a little better than the other one. You know, they both have good arms and they're both smart."

On how he balances the long-term goals and the short term goals when it comes to the defense: "You know, the thing is you have to try to get this done and win games as you're doing this and keep going. I think the key thing is, for us this past week, third downs. You know, I think they were 7 out of 13. I think they were 50 percent. Normally, we've been better than that and those things keep the drives going.

"I think we had third-and-eight and third-and-10 plus a few times. And we need to get off the field and we had been good at that. So I think that's something that we've been focusing on. You know, today's our nickel day so we'll focus on that and we'll work on some of the fundamentals and some of the techniques and get them corrected."

On whether Kolb playing will give him any advantage since he coached him: "Well, the thing is that every team has different protections and every team does things a little different. But I think the thing that's important is that I know the kind of competitor that he is and I know that he wants to play. And if I know Kevin, he's going to play unless it's just impossible and that's the competitor that he is."

On whether he thinks S Nate Allen will play this Sunday: "You'll have to ask (Head) coach (Andy) Reid on that."

On his thoughts about the progress of LB Brian Rolle: "You know, B-roll really is a playmaker. There are some things that he still needs to improve on, but you can see that he has ability. He's a tough kid, he's a smart kid and he's been making plays. You know, I'm excited for him. He's growing, he's getting better."
