Vick To Travel With Team, Mays Out

Two players will miss the opening game against the Panthers because of injury said Eagles head coach Andy Reid. Offensive lineman Todd Herremans is still recovering from surgery on his foot, and middle linebacker Joe Mays will be out with a shoulder sprain.

Reid said that starting strongside linebacker Chris Gocong will back up Omar Gaither at middle linebacker, with rookie Moise Fokou backing up Gocong.

Coach Reid also said that Nick Cole will start at left guard in Herreman's place, with Max Jean-Gilles backing him up. Reid says he has the utmost confidence in both players.

Reid also talked about the newest Eagles, tight end Alex Smith.

"He's a veteran player, has good athletic ability and speed," he said. He also has "an understanding, a good feel for this offense; also a good blocker. He's a good football player."

Rookie fifth-round draft pick Macho Harris will get the start at free safety after transitioning from a college career playing cornerback.

"We brought Macho here with the thought that he might be able to (play safety)," Reid said, "along with playing that inside nickel position. It's worked out that he's worked in the safety spot; I think he's done pretty well.

"Obviously I feel confident in him or I wouldn't put him in that spot."

Coach Reid also clarified Michael Vick's situation in regards to practice while he is on the exempt list. Vick is allowed to attend practice but not participate, and he is allowed to work with his position coach before and after practice.

Reid also said that Vick will travel with the team to Charlotte.
