Clinton-Dix, who declared for the NFL Draft following his junior season with the Crimson Tide, is considered one of the top two safety prospects and is expected to be a first-round selection. A USA Today High School All-American in 2010, he was a five-star recruit coming out of high school and ranked the No. 1 defensive back in his class. Clinton-Dix emerged as a starter for Alabama as a sophomore in 2012, leading the team with four interceptions and proving to be a crucial component on defense for the BCS National Champions.

In 2013, Clinton-Dix missed two games in October due to a suspension for violating team rules. He finished the season with 51 total tackles and two interceptions and was a First-Team All-SEC selection. Clinton-Dix underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee in early December but was healthy in time for the team's Allstate Sugar Bowl matchup against Oklahoma a month later.

Clinton-Dix took part in the NFC Scouting Combine, where he measured 6-foot-1 and 208 pounds with 32 3/8" arms and 9" hands. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.58 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.16 seconds, put up 11 reps on the bench, recorded a 33" vertical jump and 119" broad jump, and was one of the top finishers for his position group in the 20-yard shuttle (4.16 seconds) and 60-yard shuttle (11.63 seconds).
