RB Toby Gerhart Scouting Report

RB Toby Gerhart, Stanford
Pos. Rank: 7 Grade: 2nd Round Height: 6-0 Weight: 231 40: 4.50 Year: 4-Jr.

The Good: Strong, between the tackles runner with a big powerful game. Possesses tremendous vision, instincts, and better-than-average footwork. Aggressively takes on defenders and keeps his feet moving, driving forward for the extra yardage. Breaks several tackles over the course of a single run, rarely brought down by just one defender, and drags the pile for major yardage after contact. He has defenders bouncing off him, falls forward when tackled, and is a terrific short-yardage runner. Patiently waits for blocks to develop, finds the hole, and displays the ability to sidestep defenders or avoid the pile. Solid pass catcher out of the backfield who nicely adjusts to the errant throw and catches the ball with his hands. Effectively blocks when called upon, squaring into defenders and removing them from the action.

The Bad: More of a one-speed back who cannot beat defenders into the open field. Loses momentum when he must quickly change direction.

The Verdict: Gerhart has been an outstanding college back the past two seasons and nicely projects to the next level. His style and size are built for a power running offense that likes to move the ball North/South yet his ability to make defenders miss in a small area only adds to his versatility. Gerhart offers potential as a featured runner at the next level, and the team that drafts him could see early returns.
