Practice Blog: August 3

Here's a look at what took place during Monday afternoon's practice at Lehigh University. The updates were provided by Bob Kent (BK), Chris McPherson (CM) and Bo Wulf (BW)..

  • 2:15 PM -Everyone wants to know what's the latest on Stewart Bradley, who suffered a knee injury during Sunday night's practice. There is no official word from the Eagles. Head coach Andy Reid speaks after practice. As of now, Bradley is not on the practice field. Last night, after Bradley's injury, Joe Mays took the first-team reps at middle linebacker and at nickel linebacker - which Bradley also plays. Many people assume that if Bradley's injury is serious, Omar Gaither will get the nod at middle linebacker. We will see later on today. On a side note, the players are in jerseys and shorts which means no live hitting will take place today. (CM)
  • 2:31 PM- While there's speculation on some bad injury news for the Eagles defense, they've gotten some good news this afternoon as starting cornerback Asante Samuel is suited up and ready to practice with his teammates for the first time in the 2009 training camp. Samuel suffered a minor hamstring injury on Wednesday and it looks like he's finally ready to get back to business. (BW)
  • 2:48 PM - In other injury news, Trevor Laws, Macho Harris, and Victor Abiamiri are back out on the practice field to continue their rehabbing process with Rick Burkholder. Finally, after missing last night's Flight Night! practice, tight end Matt Schobel is out again today. We'll keep you posted. (BW)
  • 2:59 PM- Joe Mays lines up as the middle linebacker when the No. 1 defense takes the field in drills. (BW)
  • 3:06 PM - During the Riverside drill, we got to see the base and nickel formations for defense. The first-team base defense for linebacker was Akeem Jordan on the weak side, Mays in the middle and Chris Gocong on the strong side. The second team base, which saw only one rep in the drill, was Charleston Hughes in the middle, Omar Gaither on the weak side and Moise Fokou on the strong side. The "Buffalo" or nickel formation saw Gaither and Hughes as the linebackers. I watched Mays closely and he showed good reaction to a quick pass over the middle for Brandon Gibson. The perception seems to be that Mays is stiff in pass coverage, but I find that he's moves pretty fluid from sideline to sideline. It's good to see Asante Samuel back on the practice field. Hughes had an interception in the drill. Sean Jones made a nice interception on an A.J. Feeley pass. There was no hitting in this drill. The offense and defense were giving each other looks at the formations. (CM)
  • 3:28 PM- Joe Mays continued to play mike linebacker position in the base No. 1 defense, alongside Akeem Jordan and Chris Gocong. However, in the No. 1 nickel, the two linebackers were Jordan and Omar Gaither. (BW)
  • 3:40 PM - During the last Riverside drill, the Eagles actually showed a 5-2 look with Chris Gocong lining up as a fifth defensive end next to Juqua Parker on the left side. Lost in the shuffle of the defensive news, Jason Peters is out here again taking part in practice as the first-team left tackle. Todd Herremans is at left guard, Jamaal Jackson is at center, Stacy Andrews is at right guard and Winston Justice is at right tackle. No sign of Shawn Andrews on the practice field. (CM)
  • 4:19 PM- One last note on this afternoon's practice. Asante Samuel answered the bell on the only ball thrown his direction. He batted away an A.J. Feeley pass down the right sideline intended for Brandon Gibson with relative ease and showed no hesitance or rust. (BW)
