P Donnie Jones Added; McBriar Released

As the Eagles continue to fortify the roster, the team announced the addition of punter Donnie Jones, who agreed to terms on a one-year deal Monday. Consequently, punter Mat McBriar was released.

Jones, 32, spent last season with the Houston Texans, where he averaged 47.2 yards per punt (11th in the league) and a net average of 40.5 yards (13th in the league).

"Donnie Jones is a guy that we have admired over the last several years," said Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. "He has one of the strongest legs in the entire NFL and we're excited we had a chance to sign him. We watched a lot of tape on him and he's coming off a very good season with Houston. We feel he'll add a good element to our special teams units."

A seventh-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2004, Jones spent one season in Seattle before moving to Miami for two seasons. From there, he joined the St. Louis Rams in 2007, when he broke the Ram's 45-year-old record for punting average with 47.2 yards per punt. He would break that record the following year by hitting an even 50.0 yards per punt, and now owns the Rams' top three seasons in that category.

Jones' 33,529 total punting yards rank sixth among active punters, and his 45.6 yards per punt place him ninth on the all-time list. He was named a second-team All-Pro by the Associated Press in 2008 and 2009 and was a member of USA Today's All-Joe Team in 2008.

After spending Training Camp with the Eagles last summer, McBriar was signed early during the 2012 season, replacing Chas Henry as the Eagles punter. The team ranked 31st in average yards allowed per punt return last season.

"Mat was nothing but a consummate professional for us in 2012," said Roseman. "He battled back from a tough injury situation to punt very well last year. We just decided to go in a different direction with Donnie and we wish Mat and his family all the best as he continues his NFL career."
