Giants Preparing For Vick

Head coach Andy Reid will update quarterback Michael Vick's health status at around 11:40 this morning, which you can watch live here on PhiladelphiaEagles.com, but there's one person who isn't waiting for an update - Giants head coach Tom Coughlin.

"I expect Michael Vick to play and if he can play, I am sure he will," Coughlin told New York reporters.

Vick suffered a concussion in the third quarter of Sunday's game against Atlanta. Reid said on Monday evening that Vick was doing well, but it was still too early to determine whether the quarterback would be ready for Sunday's home opener. Vick has to pass a series of tests and be cleared by an independent neurologist before he can practice. The Eagles practice on Wednesday for the first time since the game. Reid did not say who would take the first-team reps in practice if Vick is not cleared to return.

To help bolster the Giants pass rush, Coughlin is also expecting the return of defensive end Osi Umenyiora who has missed the first two games of the season due to a knee injury.

"We certainly hope to see that Osi will be ready to go. We hope to have him on the practice field. (Wednesday) is not going to be a full-speed practice," Coughlin said. "It will probably be Thursday before that takes place but hopefully Thursday Osi will be ready to practice. If there is not a setback, then I would expect that."
