Four Observations From First Quarter

Dressed in black from head to toe, Philadelphia took the field for a game under the lights. This isn't just any game though. It's a matchup between division rivals in prime time on Monday Night Football. This is Eagles/Giants, and following the first quarter of play, the teams are tied 7-7.

1. On the opening drive of the night, the Philadelphia defense struggled to stop a hot New York offense. Quarterback Eli Manning completed 5-of-5 passes for 59 yards and a touchdown, which was thrown to receiver Odell Beckham Jr. After a hamstring injury left him questionable throughout the week, Beckham proved he will be a force tonight. His 13-yard reception put up the first points of the night, giving the Giants an early lead. It certainly was not the tone Philadelphia wanted to set.

2. Turnovers. Turnovers. Turnovers. The Eagles' defense has been dominant in that category so far this season, but how would they fair against the Giants? Coming into the game, Manning had thrown just two interceptions to open the year. With 5:18 remaining in the first quarter, the quarterback would throw his third. From the Philadelphia 23-yard line, Manning's pass was intercepted by linebacker DeMeco Ryans, ending the Giants' drive. The pick was Ryans' first of 2015 and Philadelphia's seventh this season.

3. After starting the game slow during its first possession, a third-down roughing the passer penalty on defensive end Damontre Moore set the Eagles' offense into motion. It gave the team an automatic first down, bringing it to its own 40-yard line. From there, the drive took off and ended in a Sam Bradford to Riley Cooper 32-yard touchdown pass. It also marked the first touchdown the team has scored during the first quarter this season and meant Philadelphia was able to capitalize off the New York turnover.

4. To close out the first quarter, linebacker Brandon Graham made a huge stop against Giant running back Rashad Jennings on a fourth-and-1 attempt. The running back ran to the left side of the field, but Graham was there to tackle him for a loss of 2 yards, getting the ball back into the hands of the Eagles' offense at its own 43-yard line.
