The Eagles bolstered the depth of their secondary Wednesday, signing cornerback Roc Carmichael off the practice squad of the Houston Texans. Carmichael (no relation to Eagles great Harold Carmichael) was a fourth-round pick of the Texans in 2011 and is listed as 5-foot-10, 190 pounds. He spent his rookie season on injured reserve and played six games for the Texans in 2012. Carmichael was released by the Texans as part of their final roster cutdown but was re-signed to the practice squad. At the time, there were reports of interest in Carmichael by the Eagles.
Carmichael played collegiately at Virginia Tech, where he recorded 10 career interceptions.
To make room for the new cornerback, the Eagles placed cornerback Brandon Hughes on short-term injured reserve. Hughes was re-signed by the Eagles last week but suffered an injury in last Sunday's loss to the San Diego Chargers. He has not practiced all week with a hamstring injury.
Carmichael becomes the sixth cornerback on the roster, joining Cary Williams, Bradley Fletcher, Brandon Boykin, Jordan Poyer and Shaun Prater.
