Eagles Release LB Witherspoon

Dave Spadaro announced on Eagles Live! that the Eagles have released linebacker Will Witherspoon.

Witherspoon was acquired at the trade deadline in 2009 from the St. Louis Rams in exchange for wide receiver Brandon Gibson and a fifth-round draft pick.

Witherspoon stepped in immediately and started at middle linebacker before being moved to the weakside later in the season.

The Eagles tendered offers to three restricted free agent linebackers on Thursday: Chris Gocong (third-round level), Akeem Jordan (2nd-round) and Omar Gaither (fifth-round).

The other linebackers currently on the roster are middle linebacker Stewart Bradley, who is recovering from a torn ACL suffered during the 2009 pre-season, and Moise Fokou, who started several games on the strong side in his rookie season.

Linebackers Tracy White and Jeremiah Trotter are both unrestricted free agents.

The Eagles also announced that the release of running back Brian Westbrook has become official.
