The incumbent specialists, David Akers and Sav Rocca, are both scheduled to be free agents this offseason - though Akers was given the transition tag.
Henery was 18-of-19 (10-of-11 from 40-plus yards out) on field goals and 54-of-54 on extra points in 2010. As a punter, he had a 43.2-yard average with 26 punts inside the 20-yard-line (as opposed to five touchbacks).
NFL Network's Mike Mayock received a text message from an NFL special teams coach, who said that Henery had "great field-goal stats" and will be a great kickoff specialist, especially with the new kickoff rules. And, importantly, the anonymous coach said, "like in Philly, he kicked in tough weather in college."
