DT Thornton Promoted To Active Roster

Defensive tackle Cedric Thornton has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster, the Eagles announced Monday. Thornton has spent the entire season on the practice squad, though he initially made the 53-man roster during the final roster cutdowns in September. A day later, Thornton, who starred collegiately at Southern Arkansas, was replaced on the active roster.

"You can't have enough good defensive linemen," Reid said on his WIP Coach's Show on Monday evening.

Thornton, 6-4, 309, fills the roster void left after the Eagles placed wide receiver Steve Smith on injured reserve. Head coach Andy Reid said Monday that Smith's knee swelled up on the flight to Miami and, as a result, he was inactive against the Dolphins. Further tests revealed what Reid called a "deep bone bruise."

On the season, Smith recorded 11 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown.

"He's a tough kid," Reid said. "He battled like crazy giving us some good downs."
