Andrews: Just Another Roadblock

To everyone's surprise, right tackle Shawn Andrews was not out on the practice field Thursday afternoon as the first full-team workout began. In his place, Winston Justice took the snaps at first-team right tackle.

But one day after reporting and telling the media how excited he was to be at training camp, he suffered a setback as his back tightened up after Thursday morning's conditioning drills. The offensive linemen were required to run 16 half-gassers, each in under 20 seconds. Andrews was very proud that he completed the assignment, but afterwards he felt tightness in his back. Andrews missed the final 14 regular season and three playoff games after undergoing back surgery to rectify a herniated disc last year.

Coincidentally, Andrews and his new teammate Jason Peters (quad spasm) were two of the six players placed on the Physically Unable to Perform List along with defensive tackle Trevor Laws (hamstring), cornerback Asante Samuel (hamstring spasm), defensive end Victor Abiamiri (strained pec) and running back Brian Westbrook (ankle).

"I'm in shape, man. I'm in about the best shape of my life," Andrews said. "I'm day-to-day with it ... Coach (Andy) Reid trusts that I'm going to do what I need to do to take care of business."

The starting five offensive linemen have not been able to work as a cohesive unit yet. Right guard Stacy Andrews, Shawn's brother, was rehabbing from knee surgery during the spring practices. Shawn Andrews said that chemistry won't be an issue.

"(Offensive line coach) Juan (Castillo) has been so repetitive with everything. My brother Stacy was telling me a couple of days ago that we do everything so much that I'm getting it. It's really helping and they didn't do that where he was prior to coming to Philadelphia (Bengals). We're so repetitive, so you have not choice what to do or dream about it or see it in your sleep or see it on the ceiling when you're sitting in your dorm. It's everywhere. Juan's everywhere.

"Like I said, I'm in just about the best shape of my life. I've done everything mentally, physically I possibly could do. It's just another roadblock."
