TE Zach Ertz Reaches Rare Milestone For 2017 Eagles

Posted Nov 26, 2017

Tight end Zach Ertz had one final chance.

He had nine catches for 98 yards in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 31-3 win over the Bears. The game was already at hand. The starters were beginning to don caps on the sideline.

On a third-and-3 with 6:33 left, Ertz knew the ball was coming his way even if it wouldn't be from his normal quarterback Carson Wentz. Backup Nick Foles, much like Wentz, relied upon the security blanket as Ertz hauled in a 5-yard reception to move the chains.

With that grab, Ertz went over 100 yards - 103 to be exact. Ertz is the first Eagles pass catcher to eclipse the 100-yard mark, which is remarkable considering the team is the highest scoring in the league with 31.9 per contest.

"It just shows you how unselfish this team is. The fact that it's not all about one guy. It's everybody," head coach Doug Pederson said. "Everybody's making plays on offense. We also had - we were close to having a 100-yard rusher as well tonight, too."

Ertz finished with 103 yards on 10 catches, both season highs. He also had his seventh touchdown reception of the year, a 17-yard score in the first quarter to put the Eagles on the board.

Consistently among the top tight ends in the league all year, Ertz's production dipped in the past few weeks. He had a season-low two catches for 8 yards last Sunday in Dallas. It was his first game back from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for the November 5 win over Denver.

As the Eagles hit a critical three-game road trip featuring back-to-back West Coast games in Seattle and Los Angeles (Rams), it's important to have the fifth-year tight end back on track.

"I didn’t have a huge game last week. I had a great week of practice this week. I felt like everything, the body was back together going into this game, so I was excited about having an opportunity," Ertz said. "They’re a physical front seven, so it was a big win for us. They are a good front seven. Whenever we are able to run the ball like that we are going to have a very good game. Carson does an amazing job spreading the ball around."

Even with the recent swoon, Ertz is on track to set new career highs in receptions and yards. He has already smashed his previous record for touchdowns with seven, all of them in the red zone.

“First and foremost, the coaches do a great job of putting us in situations to be successful. Alshon (Jeffery), myself we have the easy job, all we have to do is run the route and we know the ball is going to be exactly where it is," Ertz said. "The whole offseason, we put a lot of work into the red zone, specifically red zone on third down. And I think you can see that is showing up during the season, from the beginning to now. We have done really well in the red zone right now. We have to keep it up. We have a big stretch of games coming up against the Seahawks and the Rams. So we are excited about the upcoming games."
