Lane Johnson: Von Miller Is 'A Special Player'

Posted Nov 2, 2017

Von Miller and the suffocating Broncos defense charge into Philadelphia this weekend which means arguably the biggest test for Lane Johnson and the Eagles' offensive line. The Broncos are allowing the fewest total yards, first downs, and third-down conversions - stats the Eagles' offense rank near the top of the league. The Eagles haven’t played the Broncos in over four years but Johnson made note of the matchup when he saw it on the schedule in the offseason.

Going up against Miller for the first time is going to be a battle, but maybe not the one that you were expecting.

“It’s hard. You’ve got to focus on the snap count. Really snap count's everything. That’s why defenders are trying to get the start before you and I’m trying to get the start before them,” Johnson said. “It’s really a battle of the snap count.”

Johnson and quarterback Carson Wentz are 12-2 together but the tandem’s record will be challenged Sunday. Johnson remains confident in left tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai and the rest of the offensive line despite the offense’s struggles last week against the 49ers. Adding the likes of running back Jay Ajayi, a solid pass blocker in Miami, should also help if he plays Sunday. Miller is one of the league’s best at creating havoc at the line of scrimmage and getting to the opposing team’s quarterback meaning it will take effort from all ends of the offense.

“Von Miller’s the best guy I’ve ever seen on tape as far as quick twists getting off the ball. There’s nobody I can compare to him so I’ve got my work cut out for me.” Johnson said. “He gets off the snap count, sometimes he’ll get offsides a little bit, so we’ll try and use that to our advantage. He’s a special player.

“The defensive line is really good at stopping the run. They’re just well rounded and they play hard. They’ve got really good linebackers, really good secondary, they play a lot of man coverage so they’re everything that they say they are.”
