Malcolm Jenkins, Torrey Smith, and Anquan Boldin invited Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to meet with and listen to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross, grassroots organizations, policy leaders, and public defenders in the city on September 12. Jenkins and Smith, along with Rodney McLeod and Chris Long – who also attended the meetings – are members of the Players Coalition, which focuses its work on criminal justice reform.

Lurie saw the invitation as an opportunity to learn firsthand about how his players are getting involved with social injustice reform work in the community. It was important to Lurie to spend time gaining perspective and insight on the issues that members of the Players Coalition are trying to draw attention to with protests during the national anthem at NFL games.

The agenda included meetings with Ross, grassroots activists from Why Not Prosper, The Center for Returning Citizens, Mothers in Charge, Frontline Dads, ACLU Campaign for Smart Justice, Youth Sentencing and Re-Entry Project, and the Restorative Justice Program – Mural Arts Philadelphia. In addition, the group attended bail bond hearings and discussed bail bond reform with Defender Association of Philadelphia.
