FOXBORO, Mass. – A sloppy third quarter filled turnovers and defensive lapses leaves the Eagles trailing 42-35 entering the final stanza of the second preseason game, though a scintillating last-second touchdown has changed things.
On the final play of the quarter, Matt Barkley tossed a short screen pass to running back Henry Josey, who is getting the lion's share of the running back duties tonight with three of his position mates sidelined. Josey caught the pass, weaved his way through traffic along the sideline and broke a couple tackles before diving into the end zone to bring the Eagles within a score.
Elsewhere on offense, though Mark Sanchez threw his first interception of the preseason in the third quarter, he also led a second touchdown drive and finished the night with an impressive line of 11-of-12 passing for 117 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and a 112.2 quarterback rating. Sanchez's second touchdown pass came on a nice pre-snap adjustment that sprung Damaris Johnson free from the backfield for an easy 5-yard touchdown toss that capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive.
That drive came on the heels of the first possession of the half during which Sanchez was intercepted by Duron Harmon.
The Patriots would convert that interception into a 6-yard touchdown run by Ryan Mallett.
After Johnson's touchdown tied the game at 28, the Patriots would score back-to-back touchdowns on a 10-yard Roy Finch run and a 17-yard touchdown pass from Mallett to Brian Tyms. The latter came on the heels of a lost fumble by wide receiver Jeff Maehl.
Jordan Matthews, meanwhile, has rebounded in fine fashion from a disappointing debut performance last week. Through three quarters, Matthews has nine catches for 104 yards.
