Even with the power out in his Austin, Tx. home, Nick Foles could see the Eagles were interested in him.
On the second night of the draft, his notions were confirmed.
The Eagles selected the former Arizona quarterback in the third round with the 88th overall pick.
Foles, 23, met with the team several times in the months leading up to the draft. He met with Eagles coaches at the Senior Bowl in January and the Scouting Combine in February. He worked out for them in his hometown of Austin, Tx., and visited with the Eagles at the NovaCare Complex before the draft. He said he felt comfortable with the team and thought it would be a good fit.
"I knew it was a place, if I had an opportunity to play, I would really love that," Foles said. "My phone rang and it was a Pennsylvania number, and I was pumped."
Foles said he met with the Eagles offensive coaching staff and felt a connection with head coach Andy Reid, whom he lauded for his success throughout his career.
Coming onto a roster with three quarterbacks already in place, Foles is excited to learn and put in the hard work necessary to excel. He is looking forward to learning as much as possible from the Eagles staff, as well as fellow quarterbacks Michael Vick, Trent Edwards and Mike Kafka.
"I have to go in there and learn a whole offense, earn my stripes and work my butt off and prove to them I'm a winner," Foles said.
Playing behind a young offensive line last year at Arizona, Foles took his share of hits. Still, he set school records for passing yards (4,334) and completions in 2011 while throwing for 28 touchdowns.
At 6-5 and 243 pounds, Foles knows he isn't the fastest player on the field, but considers himself to be an excellent athlete. At Westlake (Tx.) High School, Foles broke Drew Brees' school passing records. He was also a basketball standout and Foles said that contributes to his ability to extend plays.
"I'm not a Mike Vick by any means, but I'm able to extend plays with my feet," he said.
And with the selection of Foles, the Eagles concluded the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
